Fix iOS 26 default calling app keeps switching to FaceTime

Learn what to do if your iPhone refuses to use the Phone app (Cellular or Cellular Service) as the default calling method and keeps switching to FaceTime Audio.
First, a little about choosing the default calling app on the iPhone
iOS 26 lets you change the default calling app by going to Settings > Applications > Automatic applications > It’s calling. The options here are Cellular/Mobile Service (ie, the Phone app), FaceTime Audio, or any third-party supported calling app you may have installed, such as WhatsApp.

Choosing a different calling app as the default makes it easier if you regularly make calls using that service. For example, if you don’t get a strong mobile signal in your home and you haven’t enabled Wi-Fi Calling, you can set FaceTime Audio or WhatsApp as the default calling app, which will work fine on your home Wi-Fi network.
Similarly, if it’s a work iPhone and you often call people on WhatsApp Business, you can set it as the default calling app.
When is the default dialer used on the iPhone
Now, you may be wondering when your iPhone uses the default calling app to communicate? The answer is very simple: whenever you don’t specify which calling app to use, your iPhone will probably use the default calling app.
As an example, imagine you have set WhatsApp as the default calling app on your iPhone. Now, when you tap a phone number on a web page, email, or message, or ask Siri to call someone, it will use WhatsApp instead of mobile calls through the Phone app. Similarly, if you tap the phone icon on a contact in the Contacts app, it will likely use the default calling app instead of something else.

But be aware that if you set FaceTime Audio or WhatsApp as the default calling application and tap a phone number on a website that is not registered with these services, your iPhone will, in most cases, place a normal call based on the carrier.
Now that you know how the default caller app works on iPhone, let’s get to the problem and solve it.
iOS 26 problem with automatic calling apps
Some users have reported that after switching to FaceTime Audio as their default calling app in iOS 26, they revert to the regular Phone app as the default keeps failing. Here are six tips to fix this. We’ll start with the obvious solutions.
Change the default calling app in two places in iOS 26 settings
- Turn on the iPhone Settings and press Applications in the end.
- Tap Automatic applications.
- Tap It’s calling.
- Select Mobile phone or Mobile service.

Ideally, the steps above should be sufficient. But if FaceTime Audio remains the default calling app, follow these steps as well.
- Back to iOS 26 Settings > Applications.
- Select FaceTime and be sure Mobile phone or Mobile service is Automatic calling app.
- Repeat step 2 for phone, WhatsApp, and other messaging apps.

Change the default calling app for specific contacts
If you have multiple call options, your iPhone will remember the one you used to contact a specific person.
For example, if I always call my wife via FaceTime Audio, tapping the call button on my wife’s contact page will automatically place a FaceTime call.
Even after changing the default app, if calls to other people in your contacts go through a different app, here are quick steps to fix that.
- Open the The phone or Contacts app and select a contact.
- Touch and hold the phone icon.
- The default dialer service for your contact will be up. To select another item, such as Phone, WhatsApp, or FaceTime, tap that option, followed by the number or email. It will add a call that you can hang up immediately. But going forward, your iPhone should remember this as your choice and make it the default calling service for this contact when you tap the phone icon. Touch and hold the phone icon again to confirm.

Update to the latest version of iOS 26
If your iPhone is running the first version of iOS 26 beta or non-beta, update it to the latest build. This should automatically take care of the problem of default calling app not changing.
Restart your iPhone
Turn off your iPhone, wait a minute, then turn it back on. Now, try changing the default calling app, and it should stay the same, except automatically reverting to FaceTime Audio.
Reset all settings
In case the above steps don’t seem to fix the problem, reset all settings by going to Settings app > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset. This will not remove personal apps, photos, music, or app data, but will reset all device settings to default.
Erase and set up your iPhone again
Finally, if nothing works for you, wait for the upcoming iOS 26 update to address this bug. Or, you can erase your iPhone and set it up again. Note that the latter can be a time-consuming process, and not every user will be willing to do it.
