Microsoft Surface Week used to mean something. Fans and journalists flocked to the screens to watch the live stream or attend the event in person when Microsoft unveiled the new hardware.
Things are very different in 2026, and I wouldn’t blame you for missing new Surface hardware announcements entirely. Microsoft did not hold an event or broadcast its announcements. Instead, the company published information in publications and published blog posts.
That means we have new Surface hardware but no hype.

The Surface Laptop 8 for Business is a great laptop in a vacuum. It earned a 4/5 in our Surface Laptop 8 for Business review thanks to its privacy screen, clear display, and solid performance driven by the Intel Core Ultra 3 Series chip inside.
But the Surface cannot be viewed outside of a vacuum. At a time when fans are driving the Surface brand “stagnant, expensive, inferior, and dead,” Microsoft can’t just refresh its Surface Laptop and Surface Pro lines with new chips and a few improvements.
I argued last week in Windows Wrap that Microsoft is rebuilding XBOX and Windows 11 while leaving Surface to collect dust.

I understand that changes like this will take time. Microsoft can’t design a new Surface that innovates form factors overnight. But there are positive steps Microsoft can take today.
Microsoft could have announced Snapdragon X and Intel versions of its Surface Pro and Surface Laptop devices side by side. They’re made for different types of customers, so it’s not like they’re going to eat each other.
Consumer-focused Surface devices are on the way. Microsoft plans to announce them later this year. They may have just announced all the new Surface devices and the launch dates mentioned. It wouldn’t be a perfect solution, but it would be better than what we got.
I have to say, I’m not really a fan of the way Microsoft is handling Surface PC launches these days. Online blog posts, which are aimed at business customers only, are NOT the way to hype your hardware program. We know that consumer diversity is around…May 19, 2026
Consumer Surface devices should also be more affordable than business versions. Announcing the affordable Surface Laptop 8, Surface Pro 12, and other PCs could mitigate some of the sticker shock caused by Surface for Business devices.
Business PCs have security features and extended support that increase their prices. Companies are also more willing to pay a premium and can get huge discounts.
Affordable consumer Surface PCs can be better received than the promise of a Surface Laptop with 8GB of RAM.
Microsoft can at least pretend to be happy with these devices. Blog posts and postings are far from the event on stage.
If I could send one message to Microsoft and its decision makers, I would say, “show pride in your work.” It’s obviously not happening right now.

Until or unless Microsoft unveils a Surface device that I can recommend over the competition, I’ll leave the Surface out of my buying recommendations here. I The Lenovo Yoga Slim 7x (Gen 11) is a thin, light, everyday version of the Surface it should to do.
Even with the new Surface Laptop 8 for Business and Surface Pro 12 for Business, the Yoga Slim 7x remains the better choice. Perhaps that will change when Microsoft unveils consumer-focused Surface hardware, but we don’t know now because the company has chosen to stagger its announcements.
