Apple Glasses as ‘all-day AI’ is exactly what I’m looking for

Apple’s glasses are expected to be unveiled next year, and a recent report said they will serve as an “all-day AI companion.” Although I’ve always been skeptical about smart glasses, that’s why I think they might be just what I’m looking for.

The latest Apple Glasses report details the features

Earlier this week, Mark Gurman on Bloomberg reported on three AI wearables being developed by Apple: smart glasses, a pendant, and AirPods equipped with a camera.

The main focus of the article was Apple glasses. According to Gurman:

The goal is for the glasses to act as an all-day AI companion, able to understand what the user sees and does in real time.

He gives several examples, such as:

  • I tell you the ingredients on the food plate
  • refers to actual landmarks during navigation
  • adding information from the event poster directly to the calendar
  • directs users to items on their grocery list

Basically, the idea is that Apple Glasses will use built-in cameras to see everything you see, and provide you with simple and intelligent assistance as needed.

This is similar to what virtual intelligence can offer today, but expanded and available in a much simpler way.

And to me, it all sounds very compelling.

Why Apple Glass sounds like the future

One thing I like about Apple Glasses is that it means I won’t need to take out my iPhone as often when I go out again. I can stay in touch with the world and thanks to Siri-handsfree on the glasses’ built-in microphone and speakers.

AI will also unlock new capabilities that aren’t possible with just an iPhone—or at least, not anywhere near as easily.

Most of my previous reflections on skepticism focused on one big question: the issue of social comfort.

Will enough people be comfortable wearing AI glasses in public for it to start feeling ‘normal’? I suspect that this concern is the main reason that Apple has a pendant in development as well.

But AirPods were first seen as unusual in public places, and now they are common. If Apple designs fashion glasses that don’t look like technology, I think that will help a lot.

Apple also, of course, has to overcome its AI shortcomings. But that’s where the Google deal becomes more important. Apple can focus more on its expertise—building great products—while relying on Google for help with AI.

Over the past few years, I have seen how important and useful AI chatbots have become in everyday life. And I have no doubt that a product like Apple Glasses will follow the same trend.

Smart glasses will seem strange at first. But I suspect that as more people start wearing them, and get used to the convenience of AI being everywhere, it will be hard to resist.

Having an AI friend who is always ready, and can see what I see, sounds very futuristic.

Do you think AI smart glasses are the future, or another invention that will never take off? Let us know in the comments.
