Apple is permanently closing three stores in the United States later today. The company first announced the closures in April, affecting locations in Connecticut, Maryland and California. Here is the full list.

Why is Apple closing these stores?

In a statement to 9 on 5 Mac in April, Apple said the closures were due to “multiple retailer departures and deteriorating conditions” at the mall where the three stores are located.

At Apple, we always strive to deliver exceptional service and a great experience to our customers. As we continue to invest to expand and improve our retail stores and offerings around the world, we are always proactive about evaluating our existing locations to ensure we can best meet our customers’ needs.

After several store departures and deteriorating conditions at Trumbull Mall, The Shops at North County, and Towson Town Center, we have made the difficult decision to close our stores in these locations.

For example, the Trumbull Mall recently lost more than $150 million in loans as it faces ongoing problems and foreclosures. Towson Town Center, just outside of Baltimore, has lost several businesses so far this year, including Tommy Bahama, Banana Republic, and Madewell.

In April, Apple said employees in Trumbull and Escondido would be able to “continue their roles at nearby Apple Retail stores.” Apple Towson Town Center employees, however, are able to “apply for open jobs at Apple pursuant to the collective bargaining agreement.”

Apple Towson Town Center became the first Apple Store in the United States to unionize in June 2022. Apple’s decision to close the store was met with strong criticism from the union, which is part of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers. Lawmakers also criticized Apple’s decision to close the Apple Towson Town Center.

In April, IAM Union International President Brian Bryant said:

“This is about whether workers are treated fairly under the law or whether they are punished for exercising their rights. […] Apple is denying unionized workers the same opportunities it offers others — and doing so because these workers chose to organize. That’s discrimination, and that’s exactly what federal labor law is designed to prevent. “

In the event of a store closing, Apple says the union contract requires it to offer referrals within 50 miles of the Towson store if it opens a new store within 50 miles. As of now, Apple has no plans to open a new store in the area.
