IT-Mobile is making changes to its network. It ditches old networking technology, and is probably the best.
The company announced in its Network Evolution log that it is preparing to retire its 2G GSM network. IT-Mobile says its old 2G network will be shut down on August 3, 2026. As 2G prepares to go, T-Mobile is reminding customers that anyone still using that old technology will lose “call forwarding, call waiting, call identity, or fixed dialing numbers through device settings” on Android and iOS.
On Android specifically, you’ll have trouble “sending large multimedia messages, such as photos or videos.”
While it may seem strange that T-Mobile was sticking with its 2G network, considering that the Evolution log says it will drop 3G (CDMA) in July 2022, an interview with Fierce Network sheds some light on that. T-Mobile’s network chief, Ankur Kapoor, told the publication that he didn’t want to “leave a lot of customers in shock.” In addition, Kapoor tells Fierce Network that he has seen many people enter the United States with devices that have not been approved for VoLTE.
However, now T-Mobile has reached a point where customers have nothing to lose by turning off 2G. Kapoor says customers have been informed, and anyone still using an older 2G device has “plenty of time” to migrate to the new 5G phones.

I’m sure it’s still there a person you are using 2G, right? It’s a big blue world we live in, after all. A quick Google search can tell you how much of a security risk 2G is compared to the current standard. In a way, T-Mobile is doing us a favor.
As we mentioned, T-Mobile shut down its 3G (CDMA) network in 2022, but released the Sprint version first. The announcement about it came a few months before 2021, as T-Mobile gave users four months to grab new devices before the deadline of January 1, 2022. Shortly after, it revealed that it will shut down Sprint’s LTE network on June 30, 2022.
Thankfully, T-Mobile said that in 2021 it will finally retire its 2G and 3G networks; however, the first one is leaving us now, years later.
