It’s one of the few business ultraportables under three pounds that offers built-in 5G and up to 64 GB of RAM bundled together, a combination that’s often too expensive for something like the ThinkPad X1 Carbon and not available at this price point anywhere else. AMD’s version is available globally now, months after its March debut at MWC 2026 raised expectations. Here’s whether it’s worth the premium.

What’s Changed in Gen 6
Lenovo first showed the T14s Gen 7 back in March with a three-pronged processor strategy: AMD Gorgon Point, Intel Panther Lake, and Snapdragon X. The Intel version hit the shelves first, and the AMD variant has now followed, already sparking a debate.
Threads on r/thinkpad are asking if this is a Gen 6 downgrade, and the answer is nuanced. AMD T14s Gen 7 trades some things (no way to upgrade SODIMM, OLED is still hard to order) for some more important ones on the road: mobile connectivity and fast memory in a light package.
T14s vs. T14: Which one is this?
A quick note when comparing the models: the T14s are thinner, lighter than the T14, trading the T14’s more modular structure for a thinner chassis and a starting weight of 2.5 pounds. If portability and 5G are top priorities, the T14s are the ones to look out for.
Processor Options
Four chips are on the table: the entry-level Ryzen AI 5 430, the mid-range Ryzen AI 5 PRO 440, the Ryzen AI 7 445, and the top-spec Ryzen AI 7 PRO 450. All four are built on AMD’s Gorgon Point architecture with Ryzen 5 graphics 3 combined with Ryzen 5 graphics. RESULTS of on-device AI workloads. Memory
The memory is sold in three categories: 16 GB, 32 GB, or 64 GB. Lenovo lists LPDDR5X-8533, although Lenovo’s PSREF notes that the default configuration runs on LPDDR5X-8000 due to platform limitations. Either way, that’s a lot of RAM in a 14-inch chassis. The downside is that there are no SODIMM slots, so choose your configuration carefully when ordering.
Connectivity and 5G
Connectivity is where the T14s Gen 7 excels in this weight class. Sub-6 GHz 5G and 4G LTE are both available as build-to-order modem options, a feature you’d normally have to pay more for in a three-pound chassis. You also get two Thunderbolt 4 ports, one USB-C 5Gbps port, one USB-A 5Gbps port, HDMI 2.1, a headphone jack, and an optional nano-SIM slot on WWAN-configured models. Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4 are standard.

The display is one place to lower expectations. Lenovo’s documents show a 2.8K (1800p) OLED with 120 Hz variable refresh as an option, but that panel isn’t actually an option in the US store at launch. What you can order today is 1920×1200 IPS at 60 Hz. It’s good enough for production work, but if OLED is what draws you to this device, check the tuner before you do.
The price
Price is another problem. US prices start at $2,559, and notably that base configuration already ships with 32 GB of RAM rather than the 16 GB you’d expect in this segment. Going up to 64 GB will push the number higher. At that price point, it competes with the MacBook Pro 14 with the M4 Pro chip, which offers better single-core performance and longer battery life.
Is This A Downgrade From Gen 6?
This is the question dominating the ThinkPad forums right now: and rightly so. The T14s Gen 7 AMD cost more than Gen 6 AMD at launch, an OLED display is listed but not official, and soldered RAM means no DIY upgrades down the line. If you already own a Gen 6 with 32 GB, there’s no good reason to rush.
But if you’re buying new and need 5G or want to go all out with 64 GB, there’s probably nothing else in this weight that does both. That’s the real value case here.
When It Falls Short
Solder RAM means no future upgrades: choose your configuration carefully at checkout. The OLED display is listed on Lenovo’s PSREF but is not yet available in the US store. And the $2,559 starting price puts it in direct competition with Apple’s M4 Pro MacBook Pro 14, which brings better single-core performance, longer battery life, and a mini-LED display that rivals OLED in most real-world situations.
