It’s no secret that the modern video game industry is in dire straits for ownership and budget. Major AAA publishers are sinking hundreds of millions of dollars and up to a decade of development time into polished blockbusters, many of which fail to recoup ballooning costs. On the other hand, we have exciting news like this one about this year’s biggest hit, Meccha Chameleon, which recently announced that it has achieved 15 million sales on Steam in less than a month.
What is Meccha Chameleon?
Two indie developers in Japan he reportedly spent two months, yes, only two months, whipping up this $5 party game about drawing people’s hips, and did the impossible by capturing the attention of millions of players.
Creator ‘lemorion_1224’ and programmer Haganeiro first met in the community of Fortnite custom map creators, and together they came up with this stealth, extreme hide and seek concept.
The players have pure white bodies and must spray paint themselves to match the texture of the walls and the surrounding area to hide from searchers. I’ve seen one site modeled after Backrooms, so it’s a perfect game beast for Gen Z. It seems incredibly simple, but the path to game success is every indie developer’s dream. It even uses free assets, which the creator expressed support for the game to launch.

Meccha Chameleon was launched on Steam on June 9, 2026, at a low price of $4.79, and took only 4 days to smash 1 million copies sold through word of mouth alone and viral Twitch clips. The latest in the trend of ‘friendslop’ games, not a pejorative term, but meaning a game where the fun is made by playing with a group of friends (and often a low-budget title). Think about it Edit 1 as another example.
As of June 26, they have sold 10 million copies, and today they announced a milestone of 15 million copies less than a month after launch. At the game’s peak, it reached 340,000 concurrent players and surpassed Overwatch and Apex Legends.
Now, as encouraging as Meccha Chameleon’s success is, it’s important to remember that not everyone can be the next Balatro or Among Us. Tens of thousands of indie games flood Steam each year, and a pitifully small percentage of those ever make enough money to support their creators. That said, when a cheap game is lightning fast, it’s something to celebrate, and I’ll be sure to download and test the game for myself!
