Old Wind Turbines Are Used In Ways That Might Surprise You Completely

While wind turbines continue to improve in both efficiency and power generation, recycling them has become a major challenge. And with the amount of waste expected to increase as wind energy continues to gain more popularity, the situation calls for solutions. In 2025, New York’s first wind farm was demolished, some of its parts likely ending up in a landfill.

Fortunately, in addition to the usual methods of recycling, one part of this equipment (the nacelle) found a new purpose as a small home. The project, “Nestle Tiny House,” is the first of its kind by Superuse Studios and European powerhouse, Vattenfall. Perhaps some of these homes may be on the way.

The nacelle (a large slatted building at the top of the building) can be converted into modern living quarters once it is out of service. The 376-square-foot structure includes a kitchen and bathroom with functional plumbing, and a living room that can double as a room where the sitting furniture is folded. It also includes heating and a water heater, powered by solar panels on the roof. Jos De Krieger, a key member of the company involved in this project (Blade-Made) and a partner in the design company Superuse Studios, told CNN.com, “Everything in the built environment – everything you see around you – has an end of life. And we need solutions without landfill or landfill, incineration, or something that is useless.”

Wind turbine blades are always a problem when it comes to recycling

The average lifespan of wind turbines can surprise you: they usually have an expected service life of up to 25 years. However, some units fail sooner due to factors such as heavier than expected operating loads, blade wear, and bad weather, to name a few. Until now, the blades themselves have been very difficult to recycle due to their strong polymer construction. Jeremiah A. Johnson, MIT Chemistry professor, explained about the blade material, “It’s basically one big molecule. Every atom is connected in a 3D network,” according to Climate.MIT.edu. Because of this molecular structure, these blades cannot be heated in liquids and repurposed like other less rigid polymers.

Without a proper way to recycle or reuse wind turbine blades, they can end up in a large pile, like the one found in Sweetwater, Texas. This small town was faced with the abandoned windmills, which in 2023, covered an area north of thirty hectares, with several stacks high.

Fortunately, efforts are underway to develop new ways to recycle these materials. Researchers at the University of Tennessee and Carbon Rivers have developed a method to break down tough fiberglass from worn out parts so it can be reused to make new ones, according to the US Department of Energy. In addition, the issues of self-repairing materials can allow cars, airplanes, and wind turbines to last for hundreds of years, which can greatly help reduce waste.
