The iPhone Ultra is coming: Six new features in Apple’s top-of-the-line model

Apple’s first foldable iPhone is coming this fall, and rumors say it will be called the iPhone Ultra. Here are six features you can expect from Apple’s high-end iPhone Ultra.

Design: Book-style case with titanium, crease-free display

Like Apple’s first foldable, the iPhone Ultra will have a very different iPhone design.

Unlike most folders, the iPhone Ultra will be wider than it is tall when unfolded. It will have a book-style fold, with an outer display that looks shorter and wider than the entire iPhone screen, and an inner display similar to the iPad mini in size and shape.

And unlike previous folds, the internal display of the iPhone Ultra is expected to have a crease-free design—a major breakthrough for the form factor.

The iPhone Ultra will take design cues from the iPhone Air. It will have a titanium bezel, be very thin when unfolded, and resemble two iPhone Airs stacked together when folded—but thinner.

Displays: Different sizes and shapes for each

The iPhone Ultra will have two displays: one on the outside, and one that is revealed when you turn it on. Rumored sizes are:

  • External display: 5.3 to 5.5 inches
  • Internal display: 7.6 to 7.8 inches

The external screen will be similar to the iPhone mini in size, but with a wider aspect ratio.

The internal screen can be very close to match the iPad mini in the hand.

Cameras: Two rear, and two front-facing lenses

The iPhone Ultra will have two rear cameras: 48MP Main and 48MP Ultra Wide.

That means users who chose the Ultra over the Pro model will miss out on the Telephoto camera and its zoom capabilities.

Since the iPhone Ultra has two displays, it will also come with two front-facing cameras: one for each display.

Not much is known about these cameras, but Apple will likely use the same 18MP Center Stage camera that was introduced with the iPhone 17 last year. A hole-punch design is expected.

Software: iOS 27 features multitasking

iOS macOS 27

iOS 27 is expected to have special features for the iPhone Ultra that may remain hidden until this fall.

Per Mark Gurman at Bloombergtwo main improvements are coming:

  1. Multitasking side apps
  2. iPad-like app architecture

We’re already seeing evidence of this in iOS 27, where Apple added landscape support to a variety of new iPhone apps.

Apple Silicon: A20 Pro chip, C2 mobile modem

The iPhone Ultra is expected to come with the new A20 Pro chip and C2 cellular modem, both of which are likely to ship with the iPhone 18 Pro.

The A20 Pro is rumored to be more advanced than usual due to the new 2-nanometer process, and the use of WMCM (Wafer-level Multi-Chip Module) to further improve efficiency.

The new chip will pack 12GB of RAM, the same as the A19 Pro. But it will reportedly pack faster LPDDR5 for better performance.

The C2 is Apple’s next-generation cellular modem. There are rumors that it will replace Qualcomm’s 5G modems with a solution designed by Apple that comes with many new benefits.

Touch ID

It may seem strange for a model called ‘Ultra,’ but Apple’s foldable iPhone will not offer Face ID for authentication. Instead, Apple is bringing back Touch ID and combining it with the power button.

Touch ID on the iPhone Ultra will be used very similarly to what the iPad Air and iPad mini offer.

Due to the small size of the device, Apple was reportedly unable to reduce the Face ID components required to fit two separate modules (one for each screen) on the iPhone Ultra. But maybe a future model will change that.

iPhone Ultra price and packaging

Rumored iPhone Ultra prices are all over the place. Most analysts expect a starting price of around $1,999 for the 256GB model.

Whatever the final price, one thing seems certain: this will be the most expensive iPhone ever. By combining what is essentially an iPhone and iPad into one device, Apple is clearly hoping that the price will be justified.
