From Matrix to ‘bar’: Nothing beats the controllable mini LEDs of the Phone 4a

What you need to know
- Nothing has gone from its Glyph lighting history on the X before the tease that comes with the Phone 4a series.
- Instead of the Glyph Matrix, the Phone 4a will feature a Glyph Bar, although nothing shines in clear detail, except to shed light on its perceived design.
- There is nothing funny about the fact that its big revelations will take place on March 5.
It’s almost two weeks until Nothing’s grand reveal, and the company is fanning the flames with some rumors of the Phone 4a.
This afternoon (Feb 20), Nothing started a long series on X talking about the Glyph interface (via 9to5Google). The company highlighted the Phone 3a series, which offered a variant of the Glyph Lighting array. Those models offered three LED strips for order progress, notifications, and the like. However, when it came to phone 3, it became even smaller, as Nothing collapsed it into a small circle with symbols.
In the Phone 4a series, there is nothing funny about the Glyph Matrix becoming the Glyph Bar. The X post teases that this bar will contain “9 individual mini-LEDs.”
It goes without saying that even though these LEDs are smaller, they are about 40% brighter than the Glyph lighting systems offered in previous series models. Additionally, it claims to use “patented technology for natural, neutral, and bleed-free light.” We are still very much in the dark about this; however, Nothing’s GIF suggests a Star Wars-like vibe from these mini-LEDs, as users clearly pointed out.
It is unclear where these LEDs will reside, as the 3a series had its lights around its circular camera system, while the flagship Phone 3 had them in the top right corner. There is no guarantee that users know that its big shows are set for March 5.
The next wave
Leaks continue to pile up on the Nothing Phone 4a series, as an overseas report claims the 4a Pro could have a larger 6.8-inch 1.5K AMOLED 144Hz display. The base Phone 4a can stick with a 6.7-inch 1.5K AMOLED screen. Rumors add that the Phone 4a may also sport three cameras, as nothing seems to be succeeding in its promises to “fix” the next series.
What caught our attention even more was Nothing’s official teaser for its upcoming event on March 5. The chipset of this series is rumored to be the new Snapdragon 7s Gen 4. Elsewhere, it seems that buyers may be in for a slight price hike with the Phone 4a and 4 Pro. The devices could jump anywhere from $50 to $100 more than what we saw before for the 4a and 4a Pro, respectively.
Android Central Take
I love a good Star Wars reference. I could honestly end my take there—but I won’t. From a “progress” perspective, for things like food orders, delivery, and things like that, I can see how the Glyph Bar could work. Maybe even notifications this would be really nice. Maybe a swirling wave of LED lights for messages or a push light for emails. Nothing has done a good job of hiding the most interesting part, giving us enough to keep the wheels of the brain turning how it really works. Maybe we’ll find out more before March 5 rolls around.
