Hue Essentials Light Strips Now Available in Europe

Philips Hue introduced its two new lamps to European customers as part of its Important line, both 5 and 10 meter options. Hue Essential light strips, expand the company’s low cost lighting range with both a standard strip and a flexible ‘flexible’ switch. The new Essential series is positioned as an affordable entry point into the Hue ecosystem while maintaining compatibility with existing Hue automation and smart home platforms.

Both models share key functionality but are designed for different installation situations.

Level Hue Essential light strip it is primarily intended for vertical installation such as under cabinets, behind televisions, or parallel shelves. The strip delivers color and white ambient light using RGB-based LEDs and is designed for indirect decorative lighting rather than basic room lighting.

Philips Hue specifies an output of up to approx 1700 lumens (possible with the 5m option), with support for bright scenes with adjustable white tones. The strip can be cut to length during installation but cannot be extended beyond the given size, marking a clear difference to the high Tier Hue light strips.

The Essential series presents some functional compromises compared to the premium Hue strips. The minimum dimming reaches about 2% of the brightness than the lower levels offered by the top models, and the color matching technology becomes easier. Control is available via Bluetooth for basic use or Zigbee via Hue Bridge, for automatic activation, scenes, remote access, and wider ecosystem integration. Thread is not mentioned as an option in these threads.

Next to the standard model, Philips Hue offers Hue Essential Flex light linedesigned for installation where a traditional straight line would not be suitable. The ‘flexible’ version can be bent, folded, or positioned around corners, mirrors, furniture edges, or decorative wall features. While both fibers provide gradient light effects, the Flex model prioritizes physical flexibility over high brightness or elasticity.

Unlike the regular Essential strip, the flexible version is not meant to be cut, as its internal construction supports molding rather than modular cutting. This makes it best suited for decorative paintings or architectural accent lighting.

Both Essential light strips focus on ambient light instead of task lighting. Philips Hue positions them as emotional lighting solutions capable of creating color gradients, indirect wall-bathing effects, and location-based lighting in all living spaces. Common installation situations include television backlighting, shelf lighting, bedroom accent lighting, and indirect ceiling lighting. The simplified hardware design also allows Philips Hue to offer these products at a lower price than its own The Gradient or Light clip Plus width.

Essential light strips work within the Philips Hue ecosystem and support app control, programming, and voice assistants. When paired with the Hue Bridge, the lights gain access to advanced automation features and integration with major smart home platforms. The new Essential devices by Philips Hue also participate in the company’s progress in Matter integration, allowing exposure to Apple Home, Google Home, and other compatible Matter platforms with the Hue Bridge acting as the default Matter Bridge. As with other Hue lighting products, full configuration, effects, and firmware management remain within the Hue app.
