How to download a PDF from a browser on an iPhone or iPad

In this quick guide for beginners, we’ll show you how to save a PDF to a website in Safari, Google Chrome, and Firefox on your iPhone or iPad.

PDF in Safari on iPhone

Although this is a simple task, many new iPhone and iPad users have trouble with it, hence this post. Note that we’re not talking about saving a Safari web page as a PDF; we have a separate course for that.

Before you continue, remember that all the browsers mentioned here (Safari, Chrome, and Firefox) will save the PDF file to the Apple Files app.

Safari

Safari is the default web browser on all Apple devices. If you want to save a PDF from a web page open in Safari on your iPhone or iPad, here are all the steps.

1) Open Safari and visit the website with the PDF. If the PDF opens directly in the browser (you’ll see its first page, etc.), skip to the next step. And if the web page displays a Download or Save it button, then tap that first.

2) Tap that three dots icon and select Share it. You can also touch and hold the URL bar and select Share.

3) Make sure you see ‘PDF document‘ label under the file name, as shown in the image below. Then, press the button Save to files button. The iOS Files app interface will open. Use the back (<) button in the upper left corner to navigate to an area and folder. You can choose from iCloud Drive (similar to Google Drive), My iPhone (local storage), or third-party services added to the Files app.

4) If you are in the folder where you want to save the file, look for ‘Save as‘ bar below. This is where you can rename the PDF file if needed and assign a tag. Finally, press the button Save it button.

Once you’ve landed on a PDF, just tap to open it in the Preview app for iOS 26. You can also touch and hold the PDF icon and choose Quick View to open it right in the Files app. Or, use the Get Info option to set the default app for viewing PDFs on this iPhone or iPad.

Important: If Safari doesn’t open the PDF but downloads it directly, then do one of the following:

  • Go directly to your Safari Downloads folder in the iOS Files app.
  • Tap the arrow icon in the URL bar, then tap Downloads. From here, tap the PDF to open it, then tap the share icon and select Save to files.

Google Chrome

Many people who switch from an Android phone or Windows PC to an iPhone or iPad tend to skip Safari and download Chrome right away, since that’s what they’ve been using all along. The good thing is that saving a PDF using Chrome is not easy, and here are the steps for that.

1) Open Google Chrome on your iPhone or iPad and visit the website where you want to download the PDF. Tap the ‘Download’ or ‘Save’ button on the page if it is displayed.

2) When the PDF opens in Safari, you should see a download banner on the screen. Tap that DOWNLOAD button here. When the download is complete, tap OPEN INSIDE.
