The MacBook Pro touch screen is shaping up to be just what I was looking for

Apple’s big MacBook Pro refresh is coming this year, and it’s shaping up to be just what I’ve been looking for. That’s why I’m optimistic about the big changes coming later this year.

One of my favorite iPhone features is coming to the Mac

When Apple added a notch to the MacBook Pro display in 2021, it felt like a design compromise for no gain. For comparison’s sake, when the iPhone X debuted with a notch, the tradeoff was clear. There was a notch, but there was also Face ID.

While the Mac’s Face ID will reportedly be around for years, the upcoming MacBook Pro will make a big change.

I’ve written about this before, but I love Dynamic Island on my iPhone. It’s a smart way to present real-time information.

I love the streaming experience from Apple Music and Overcast. I love the weather forecasts from Carrot Weather. I love the scores from Apple Sports. I like to track my Uber arrival time. I love tracking my flight information with Flighty.

According to today’s report from BloombergDynamic Island is finally coming to Mac, and I couldn’t be happier.

The MacBook Pro’s Dynamic Island will reportedly be “built around a notch that’s the size of a camera port.” It will be smaller than the pill-shaped cutout on the iPhone 17 Pro.

MacBook Pro touch screen interaction

Additionally, today’s reporting gives me hope that Apple isn’t just ditching the touchscreen in the MacBook Pro and calling it a day. I’m glad to hear that Apple is making some improvements to macOS to not only include touch input, but also to improve the experience.

Here’s Mark Gurman explaining some of the interactions:

“For example, when users touch a button or control, the interface will display a new type of menu around their finger that offers the most appropriate options for touch commands.

The software will also display the most relevant set of controls based on previous user interactions. And when someone touches something in the menu bar at the top of the screen, the set of controls will expand for easy finger selection.”

I’m still concerned about the potential side effects or compromises Apple will have to make to add a touchscreen to the Mac. How will the overall design change? Will Apple have to compromise battery life and thermals?

There are many unknowns, but I am very optimistic now that we have learned more about the use of touch screen software.

The new MacBook Pro will be foldable

This complete refresh of the MacBook Pro is currently scheduled to launch this fall, according to Bloomberg. Apple is still expected to release the M5 Pro and M5 Max MacBook Pro models next month.

In addition to the Dynamic Island and touch screen, the new MacBook Pro models will reportedly use OLED displays. Sign up. Me. At the top.
