What is Pokémon Day?

Pokémon Day is an annual celebration of …Pokémon. It is held every year on February 27 to mark the release of the original game in Japan (known as Pokémon Red and Blue in the US).

Big announcements, releases, and more for Pokémon Day 2026

This year’s celebration has already started before the actual day with this Friday’s Pokémon Presents show. While this week’s live stream will mark the official launch, we’ve already seen some exciting new products available, including new LEGO Pokémon sets, Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen officially announced for Switch and Switch 2, confirmation of this week’s Presents show, a demo of the upcoming Pokémon Pokopia game on Switch, and more.

While the Presents show is heavy on apps, replay experiences, and other TCG stuff, this being the 30th anniversary show, there are also remakes of the original games officially coming to Switch and Switch 2, and we’re expecting big things. Will we get a teaser or an official announcement for the next Gen 10 Pokémon Switch game? It is possible. Will we finally see the long-rumored Black/White or Gold/Silver games available on current-gen Nintendo hardware? We already got a reissue of sorts, but it’s possible. I think a lot of people, including us, have high hopes for the announcement of Colosseum/Gale of Darkness for the Switch Online Game Cube library, but you never know.

When was Pokémon originally released?

The first real Pokémon experience was officially known as Pocket Monsters Red and Green and was released in Japan on February 27, 1996. It has since been officially shortened to Pokémon and became the worldwide phenomenon we all know, turning 30 this year.
