Another iPhone 17 model is launched next week: Here are all the new features

Apple is launching new products next week, as confirmed this morning by CEO Tim Cook. The iPhone 17e will be one of these launches, here are the new features you can expect.

A19 chip

The iPhone 17e is expected to feature the latest generation A19 chip. That’s the same chip that was introduced in the iPhone 17 last fall.

By offering its budget model the A19, Apple is making the iPhone 17e future-proof for less advanced users. The power and efficiency of the A19, combined with the Neural Engine for AI functions, will make the iPhone 17e stack up well against more expensive models.

MagSafe support

When the iPhone 16e was launched last February, it offered many modern features at a low price. But among the most notable omissions, the lack of MagSafe may be the most painful.

MagSafe has been part of the iPhone lineup since 2020, when the iPhone 12 debuted. So by removing it from the iPhone 16e, Apple not only withheld a great charging solution, it also reduced support for the large ecosystem of MagSafe accessories.

Fortunately, the iPhone 17e is expected to add MagSafe support. The complaint of users over the past year has been clearly heard.

18MP Center Stage front camera

One of the most surprising features of the rumored iPhone 17e is the front camera.

The iPhone 17e will reportedly get the new 18MP Center Stage camera that was first released on the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17 Pro last fall.

No other camera changes are expected—for example, the iPhone 17e will still have a single rear camera. But adding the new, popular Center Stage front-facing camera is a huge improvement.

C1X and N1 wireless chips

The iPhone 16e was the first model to offer a 5G modem designed by Apple: the C1. It didn’t take long for Apple to ship a second-generation chip, as the C1X arrived last fall with significant speed gains.

Rumors say that the iPhone 17e will add a new C1X cellular modem, and also get an N1 wireless chip that handles Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and Thread.

It’s still early in the era of Apple silicon for wireless communication, but we’ve seen several advantages of Apple-made chips, and that may prove to be true in the coming years.

Maybe: Dynamic Island instead of notch

One of the long-standing rumors of the iPhone 17e is that its design will change, with the notch being replaced by a Dynamic Island.

Lately, rumors have been rife as to whether this change is actually happening.

Dynamic Island will be a great upgrade for two reasons:

  1. The iPhone 17e will have a modern look, which looks very similar to all other iPhones today
  2. Dynamic Island software features will be available on the ‘e’ line for the first time

I’ve been a huge fan of Dynamic Island since it debuted with the iPhone 14 Pro. While I hope the iPhone 17e will get a new feature, I will also understand if Apple chooses to keep the Note around. That move could help push consumers toward the more expensive $799 iPhone 17.

New features of the iPhone 17e: folding

The iPhone 17e is expected to keep the same price of $599 as its predecessor, and there is also a possibility that it will increase the storage from 128GB to 256GB.

Whether that happens or not, the above improvements make the iPhone 17e an attractive, modern iPhone at a compelling price. The main drawbacks of the ‘e’ model are the 60Hz display with no ProMotion, no Camera Control, and only one rear camera. But those flaws aside, $599 still sounds hard to beat.
