Fix dark background image on iOS 26 Lock and home screen

In this troubleshooting guide, we look at possible solutions to fix the problem where the colored iPhone or iPad Lock screen and home screen background image is dark or blurry.

Black iPhone Lock Screen

Several iOS 26 users have reported a black background image on the Lock Screen and Home Screens after updating their iPhones to iOS 26 or a later version, such as iOS 26.3. After digging deeper, I found similar complaints from iOS 18 and iOS 16.

Users have shared that their familiar family or other beautiful wallpapers will disappear, leaving the iOS lock screen completely black. In some cases, the background image is blurred, and the set image is not clearly visible.

After reviewing hundreds of answers, here are solutions that seem to have worked for different iPhone users.

Restart your iPhone

Temporary system issues can cause your iPhone wallpaper to appear differently than intended. Just restart your iOS device, and this problem should go away.

Update to the latest version of iOS 26

If your iPhone or iPad is running an earlier version of iOS 26 or iPadOS 26, upgrade to the latest version available by the time you read this.

Try to move the focus to the background image

You can link Lock screens to the focus feature. For example, if you have a motivational wallpaper on your lock screen, you can have it appear automatically when you enter Workout Focus.

Follow these steps to disable Focus with Lock Screen and check if the background image goes dark or its blurring problem is solved:

  1. Touch and hold your iPhone Lock screen until it shrinks.
  2. When Focus is engaged (in which case the The word focus just instead Concentrate), tap it and uncheck the linked Focus.
  3. Tap that X button and return to your Lock Screen. Hopefully, the issue should be resolved now.

About sleep focus, which dims the lock screen

The iPhone Lock Screen goes dark or dark by design when it’s in Sleep Focus mode. There is no way to stop this, other than turning off Sleep Mode completely. You can also go to iOS Settings > Focus > Sleep and tap Options under Customize Screens to turn off the Sleep Screen, but it won’t make the Screen Lock return to the normal look, as long as Sleep Focus is active.

Close Reduce Brightness

If you don’t like the new Liquid Design interface of iOS 26, another way to tone it down is to activate Reduce Transparency in the accessibility settings.

Some users shared on the Apple Community forum that turning off Reduce Transparency, albeit temporarily, helped them fix the black wallpaper problem for them. Here’s how you should proceed:

  1. Turn on the iPhone or iPad Settings and go to Accessibility > Display & Text Size.
  2. Shut up Reduce Transparency if it works.
  3. Restart your iPhone. The issue of dark or blurry wallpaper should be fixed.
  4. If you have to use Reduce Brightness, go back to the accessibility settings and turn it back on. The wallpaper should no longer be black.

Switch to Wet Glass style

A few users also shared that switch Tinted The appearance of Liquid Glass instead of It’s clear fixed the weird wallpaper problem for them. Try it yourself on iOS 26 Settings > Display & Light > Liquid Glass.

Set wallpaper again

In case you started seeing a dark or blurry wallpaper after making changes to your current Lock Screen, skip that and set a new lock screen wallpaper using the same image in your photo library.

Do not use a scene background image

iOS 26 lets you set a 3D Lock Screen wallpaper that moves when you tilt your iPhone. If you encounter an unwanted dark background image in this mode, set a normal, static background image instead.

Reset all settings

If the above solutions don’t work and living with this issue isn’t an option for you, consider resetting all iOS settings. It should clear the problem.

Wait for the next update

If nothing helps, wait for the upcoming iOS 26 or iOS 27 update, and hopefully Apple will fix the problem then (fingers crossed).
