The company that makes some of the world’s most expensive headphones has just created car speakers smaller than a credit card. And they say these speakers can make the inside of your car sound like a room ten times its actual size.

Warwick Acoustics, a UK-based audio company, has been working on a new type of car speaker for years. The company is known for its electrostatic headphones, which cost up to $36,000 for a set of headphones. Now it’s bringing that technology to cars, and a luxury car from the automaker is expected to be the first to use it sometime in 2026.

What sets these speakers apart

Most car speakers use the same basic technology that speakers have used for decades. There is a cone connected to a magnet and a voice coil. When electricity flows through the coil, it pushes the cone back and forth, and that movement creates sound waves.

Warwick speakers work in a completely different way. They use something called electrostatic technology. Instead of a cone and magnet, there is a very thin sheet of material (called a diaphragm) placed between two metal plates. When a sound signal runs through the plates, it creates an electric field that pushes and pulls the diaphragm to produce sound.

The result is a speaker that measures 1 millimeter thick. With its housing, the total thickness is 12 millimeters. A typical car speaker is thick and heavy. Warwick says its speakers weigh 90 percent less than conventional speakers.

Why Small Speakers Are Important in a Car

Being thin is not just about looking cool. It solves a real problem.

In most cars, the speakers are limited to certain places: the doors, the dashboard, maybe the rear shelf. These areas are determined by how much space is available. There are many common speakers, so car designers have to work around them.

Warwick speakers are so small and light that they can be placed in places that have never been possible before. They can fit through the A-pillars (the pillars on either side of your windshield), the roof, or other tight spaces. This opens up new options for where the sound comes from inside the cabinet.

And where the sound comes from is just as important as how it sounds.

This part sounds too good to be true. Warwick says its speakers can make your car sound like it’s playing in an area ten times larger than the actual cabin.

Here’s how the company describes it. In a normal car, sound waves bounce off the surrounding surfaces: doors, windshield, seats. Your ears pick up on this thought and your brain interprets the sound as coming from a small, enclosed space. That’s why car audio, even in expensive cars, can feel muted compared to a good pair of headphones or a good living room setup.

Warwick’s electric speakers produce what the company calls “planar” or near-flat sound waves. These sound waves behave differently. According to Ian Hubbard, the company’s Chief Commercial Officer, flat waves create the impression that the sound started much further away, up to 30 meters (about 100 feet) from your ears.

Your brain interprets this as being in a very large space. So even though you are sitting in the car, the music sounds like it is filling a concert hall.

The company also claims that this technology reduces the need for heavy digital processing. Most high-end car audio systems rely on software to control the sound and create an immersive experience. Warwick says its speakers naturally produce that wide sound, which means digital processing systems can be smaller, cheaper, and use less power.

No Strange World Things

There is one more detail that you should be aware of. Traditional speakers use magnets made from rare earth elements. These materials are expensive, mined extensively in a few countries, and extracting them creates environmental problems.

Warwick electric speakers do not use any rare earth elements. The company also claims to make its speakers entirely out of used and recycled materials. In an industry where sustainability is becoming a big selling point, especially in electric vehicles, that’s a logical advantage.

Who gets these speakers first

Warwick has yet to name the type of car that will be the first to use the system. The company said it will be “the world’s leading luxury car maker” and that it is expected to launch in 2026.

In addition, the company did not abandon the strategy. What we do know is that Warwick has been developing this automotive-specific technology for years, and says that production is imminent. This is not a concept demo or a lab prototype sitting behind glass at a trade show.

What does this mean for the average car buyer?

If you’re hoping to see electric speakers in a regular car anytime soon, that’s probably not happening. This technology starts in the luxury segment, and it will probably stay there for a while.

Still, the specs work in their favor in securing widespread adoption. Speakers are easier to manufacture than traditional ones, are much smaller, and don’t rely on rare earth materials. If the initial luxury partnership goes well, the road to mass production looks shorter than you might expect.

An important point

Warwick Acoustics is trying something that’s never been done before in production cars: a fully electric speaker system built into the cabin from the ground up.

The claims are huge. A sound stage ten times the size of a car. Speakers you can’t even see. There are no rare earth things. And the launch of the actual car in 2026. Whether the real-world performance is like the pitch, we won’t know until someone sits in that first car and presses play.
