iPhone 17e vs iPhone 17: What’s really different?

Apple recently introduced the iPhone 17e, the latest member of the iPhone 17 family. Here are the similarities and differences between the iPhone 17e and the iPhone 17.

iPhone 17e and iPhone 17: Similar features

The iPhone 17e and iPhone 17 have some features in common, including:

  • They both have A19 chipApple’s latest generation processor—although the iPhone 17e has a single GPU core underneath
  • They both did it Ceramic Shield 2 in their display of excellent scratch resistance on the iPhone
  • The last premise is 256GB in both models
  • MagSafe included in both

But that’s pretty much where the similarities end.

The iPhone 17e has the same basic chip as the iPhone 17 minus one GPU core, so from a performance perspective it should be on par.

Besides, it’s a very different model. And the two biggest differences involve cameras and displays.

When it comes to the differences between the iPhone 17e and the iPhone 17, the most important ones fall into two buckets:

For cameras, the iPhone 17 has an 18MP Center Stage camera that allows you to take selfies with automatic frames, no matter how you hold your iPhone.

Despite rumors that this feature is coming to the iPhone 17e, that turned out not to be the case. The iPhone 17e has the same 12MP TrueDepth camera that was standard on most previous iPhone models.

And on the back of the device, the iPhone 17e only has one rear camera compared to two on the iPhone 17—no Ultra Wide lens.

The iPhone 17e’s 48MP Fusion Main camera is comparable in many ways to the iPhone 17’s, but it has some issues. For example, its image stabilization feature isn’t that advanced, and it doesn’t support the latest generation of Photo Styles.

If you’re interested in the Dual Capture feature of the iPhone 17, that’s also missing from the iPhone 17e.

The display is another big point of difference.

The iPhone 17e does not offer the 120Hz ProMotion support for the always-on display that the iPhone 17 has. It also has a smaller display at 6.1 inches vs 6.3 inches on the iPhone 17.

The notch on the iPhone 17e also means it’s the only modern iPhone without a Dynamic Island. Dynamic Island for iPhone 17 gives you a great look.

The iPhone 17 display is also about 25% brighter than the iPhone 17e.

Is this a big difference in the end? It depends on your priorities. But there are more feature differences in the iPhone 17e that are worth noting.

iPhone 17e vs iPhone 17: What else is missing or different?

iPhone 17e

Some minor differences between the iPhone 17e and the iPhone 17 include the following:

  • Battery: iPhone 17e has 26 hours of video playback compared to 30 hours on iPhone 17
  • Mobile phone: The iPhone 17e uses Apple’s internal C1X modem, while the iPhone 17 has a Qualcomm modem
  • Wireless: The iPhone 17e doesn’t have the new N1 wireless chip that the iPhone 17 has
  • Buttons: The iPhone 17 Camera Control Button is not included on the iPhone 17e
  • It’s charging: The iPhone 17 has slightly faster charging capabilities than the iPhone 17e
  • Colors: iPhone 17e comes in Soft Pink, Black, and White; The iPhone 17 is available in Lavender, Sage, Mist Blue, Black, and White

The price the biggest difference: the iPhone 17e starts at $599, while the iPhone 17 is $799.

The iPhone 17e has some nice changes over last year’s iPhone 16e, especially the addition of MagSafe and the C1X modem. But aside from that, the iPhone 17 is so powerful that it’s hard for Apple’s budget model to stack up.

My recommendation: if you can find a way to splurge and buy the iPhone 17 with the iPhone 17e, I think you’ll get your money’s worth.
