Claude is making its AI memory feature free for all ChatGPT users

Claude reappeared in another form in 2026. The Claude app on iOS recently took first place in the United States and is now a top 10 productivity app on iOS in over 100 countries.

To capitalize on this momentum and make its services even more attractive to free users, Claude has now added its AI memory feature, previously restricted to paid plans, to its free tier. Users can now refer to their past conversations to get context-aware responses.

How Claude’s memory improves your conversation

If you’ve used any AI chat service before, you know that one of the biggest pain points is having to give your AI the same instructions every time you start a new project. Claude’s memory feature solves this problem.

Instead of starting to freeze each session, Claude can search through your previous conversations, pull up the exact topic you discussed earlier, and continue the thread seamlessly. Your conversations are continuous instead of fragmented, resulting in smart, context-aware responses and fluid information.

Another advantage of this feature is that you can tell Claude to search your previous conversations and find any information. I like that you can limit memory to specific projects, thus keeping your personal conversations separate from work conversations.

This comes in addition to the features Claude has already added to its free tier, including app connectors, file creation, repetitive workflow capabilities, long chats, image search, and more.

This sounds amazing, but my memory lives elsewhere

Another concern that new Claude users may have is that their conversations are saved by other AI chatbots, such as ChatGPT. Anthropic, Claude’s parent company, has a solution for that.

The company has added a new memory import tool. It allows you to import your chat history from other chatbots into Claude’s memory. Your other AI provider doesn’t even need an export feature.

Claude gave notice that you can log into your existing chatbot. The information is written in such a way that it will find all your chat history in one chat. You can copy the answer and import it into Claude’s memory, which according to the company, takes 24 hours to compile.

You can use this method to send your chat memory to all popular AI providers. These include ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and Microsoft Copilot.

What it means for Claude users

The addition of the memory feature to Claude’s free tier is great news for both new and existing users alike. You get to have an in-depth conversation with Claude, reference old data, and get a report of your previous conversations.

Add to that, you can finally import your chat history from other chatbots. This is one of the best times to check out Claude’s run.
