Govee UpDown Wall Light Review

The decision

The Govee Outdoor UpDown Wall Light is the kind of product that makes you smile the second it’s turned on. It’s bold and a little over the top, which is exactly what you’d expect from Govee in its attempt to reinvent outdoor lighting. With custom colored surfaces on all four sides, full Matter support, and year-round weather protection, this is one of the smartest outdoor items money can buy. It won’t suit everyone’s design taste, but if you like your smart lighting bold and architectural, the UpDown has you covered.

  • Crazy custom colors

  • Bright, even spread

  • Material and ecosystem support

  • Simple, solid setup

  • There is no built-in microphone

  • Bulky design

  • The app is still full

Govee UpDown Wall Light: An Introduction

The Govee UpDown Wall Light is mounted on the wall
  • Lighting type: Smart outdoor wall lamp with four independent lighting zones
  • Connectivity: Wi-Fi, Bluetooth
  • Ecosystems: Matter, Amazon Alexa, Apple Home, Google Home, SmartThings

Govee’s latest outdoor light, the UpDown Wall Light, takes the brand’s trademark RGBIC and beams it onto your outdoor walls.

Instead of the usual static light, UpDown offers, as the name suggests, beams that shoot up, down, but also out from both sides, and, creating a collapsible wash of color that can be processed independently around.

Like many of Govee’s recent releases, such as the Strip Light 2 and the Uplighter, it’s compatible with Matter out of the box, so it integrates seamlessly with any smart home ecosystem and works directly with Alexa and Google Home.

I’ve had the UpDown lighting up my office patio for a few weeks, read my full review to find out more…

Design and installation

UpDown is incredibly large and massive. It actually looks more like a speaker than a lamp, with its curved front panel. It looks really weird. Not exactly bad, but certainly not quaint either.

At just over 10 inches tall and about 5 inches wide (and sticking 4 inches out of the wall when mounted), the UpDown will be noticed.

If you love modern installations, like me, you will love it. If you prefer more traditional designs, like my wife, then “no way, not in the house” (that’s why I mounted it on my office wall.)

The ribbed front design gives it a futuristic vibe, which is why it won’t appeal to traditionalists, but when it’s lit up, it all makes sense. During the day, it looks great, and obviously everything looks even better when doing your thing in the dark, but more on that in a bit.

The casing is a tough UV-resistant polycarbonate instead of metal, making it lighter and better suited to weather exposure. It doesn’t have the premium “metal” feel, but it’s well built and clearly designed for outdoor life.

The headlights and taillights feature lenses, reflectors, and diffusers and both sidelights have frosted lenses for their effects.

Installation is easy enough: screw the included bracket into your wall, stick the seal in place, and secure it with the side screws.

There is a little plastic on the back part that you can remove to feed a different phone; ie if you want the cable to go straight down instead of disappearing into the wall behind it.

The wiring is also straightforward. The two wires are black and white and there is a little card that says which phase / live is the black one.

Different regions have different color codes, so I think black and white is easier.

If you want more waterproofing, a little silicone bead on the edges wouldn’t hurt, but it’s already IP66 rated, which means it’s completely dustproof and can handle powerful jets from any direction.

Setup and application

When you turn it on for the first time, UpDown greets you with a quick light show before going into standby mode.

Pairing is painless. You can scan the Matter QR code directly, but the Govee app is still the best place to start. It uses Bluetooth to find the device, then connects to your 2.4GHz Wi-Fi (no 5GHz support).

Once it’s online, you can connect it to Alexa, Google Home, or Apple Home with Matter using the same QR code.

That said, the Govee app remains the command center for everything cool this light can do. It’s still busy – like a light lab housed in one screen – but it’s a lot easier to navigate these days.

You get a bunch of preset scenes, a bunch of DIY modes, and the option to literally “paint” your effects all over the lighting scene.

There are 17 adjustable segments on each side, as well as upper and lower beams, all of which you can add additional effects to, so that the level of customization, as always with Govee, is excellent.

Govee’s AI Lighting Bot can even generate new patterns based on any mood or theme you type. This is brilliant, sometimes weird, but always fun.

Finally, if you’re out of ideas, you can browse and download lighting scenes created by other Govee users right within the app.

With RGBWW emitters on the top and bottom and RGBIC down the sides, the UpDown delivers incredibly smooth and clear light. It is rated at 1,200 lumens, which is bright enough to illuminate a large patio or wall space without creating a strong glow.

The wall wash design helps to distribute the light well. No weird hotspots and no uneven patches. Each side can be tuned independently, so you can mix warm whites with bright colors or go full gradient party mode.

Compared to the Govee Uplighter Floor Lamp, which relies on light displays, the UpDown feels more structured. Some of the fast effects are overdone on the outside… just because you can’t doesn’t mean you should, but slow transitions and static gradients look incredible.

Color accuracy is excellent, with rich reds, deep blues, and pure whites that rival more expensive products. Set everything to white, and it’s light enough to make your outdoor space usable at night. Just remember: this is an accent light, not a floodlight. For style, not safety.

The music mode is the only minor letdown. There’s no built-in microphone, so it relies on your phone’s microphone to sync light and sound, which is obviously not ideal if your phone is inside.

If you have Govee’s DreamView system, however, it syncs well across multiple devices, making it a fun feature for parties or movie nights out.

Final thoughts

The Govee Outdoor UpDown Wall Light sums up everything Govee does best: great color, smart features, and loads of personality. It’s bright, playful, and surprisingly easy to use once you find the settings you prefer.

The design may divide opinions, but if you like modern lighting and want something that turns heads, it’s an outstanding choice.

At $129.99 for a single or $229.99 for a two-pack, it’s a great value considering the lightness, build quality, and Matter support.

If you’re after a smart, compact outdoor device, look elsewhere. But if you want amazing light shows in your outdoor spaces UpDown is a great option.

How do we test

When we publish our reviews, you can be sure that they are the result of “life” and long-term testing.

Smart lights usually live within an ecosystem, or a range of products – so-called – that all work in harmony. Therefore, it is impossible to use the connected light for a week and bring a decision.

Because we test smart home kit all day, every day, we know what’s important and how certain lights compare to others you might consider.

Our reviews are comprehensive, objective and fair and, of course, we are not directly paid to review the device.
