How to Clean Your Car’s Grille, Regardless of Style

If you are among the millions of car owners in the world, you probably have some ideas about not only keeping that car clean, but also how often you need to clean it. For many, those features require more than a quick run through the car wash once or twice a month. For some, washing a car, truck, or SUV is a ritual that must be done at least once a week.

However, extremely dirty grills with accumulated insects may benefit from some cleaning agents. If your car’s grill needs a deep cleaning, here are a few steps that can help increase the shine.

Before you get into cleaning your grill, you’ll want to make sure you have the above-mentioned car cleaning supplies handy. With those items in hand, follow these steps to properly clean your car’s front grill.

To clean the grill with a bug-specific cleaner such as Griot’s Bug and Smudge Remover:

1. Apply bug spray to visibly dirty areas while the front grille is dry.
2. Let the detergent set for the specified amount of time. If you’re not sure, check the directions on the label.
3. With a soapy sponge, towel or soft bristle brush, scrub the entire grill, making sure to get into all the crevices.
4. Using your hose, rinse the grill thoroughly.

To clean the grill with just soap and water:

1. Use your hose to spray the front grill of the car, removing any loose dirt and bugs.
2. With a damp sponge, rag or soft brush, pre-grease the grill with soapy water.
3. Allow the soapy water to soak in for a few minutes. This is a good time to work on tires and wheels to clean the water or other parts of the car.
4. Clean the grill with the soft scrubbing option of your choice, working into every crevice.
5. Spray the area completely clean with your hose.

If the grill is still dirty, repeat the steps as listed. Once the grill is clean, dry it with a microfiber cloth to prevent water spots.

Since some front grilles aim to enhance the design of a car, truck, or SUV, it is important to remember that there are several important engine parts located behind the grille and under the hood, including the radiator and its cooling fins. Given that fact, you should clean the grille on your car only when the engine is cool.

Depending on the make and model of your vehicle, there may be sensors and electronics hidden from view. Those parts are designed to withstand a certain level of moisture, as your car may be able to withstand heavy rains on the road, but there is a limit to what they can take, so be careful to reduce the flow of water when you spray the grill down for cleaning.

Finally, it is important to only use a sponge, rag, or soft brush when scrubbing the grill. This is because abrasive scrubbers may cause irreparable damage to the materials used in the grilles themselves, as well as any protective openings that may be present. In short, clean those grilles with the same care you might apply to the rest of your car.
