Last look before going live today

Last week Nintendo announced a surprise Nintendo Direct on Mario Day. Maybe it’s not the main Direct you were expecting for a new Mario game for the Switch 2 or something, but instead a dedicated Super Mario Galaxy Movie Direct show set to give us our last good look at the new movie before release.

Mario Day 2026 – Super Mario Galaxy Movie Direct

This year’s Mario Day festivities are a little different. First, it’s the first annual Mario celebration after the launch of the Switch 2 and it also comes just a few weeks before the long-awaited Super Mario Galaxy Movie hits theaters. After the official toys and movie collection hit stores last month and its release is fast approaching, we should be getting more action on Mario’s next big screen adventure and it’s all going live later today.

Nintendo will host a dedicated Super Mario Galaxy Movie Direct today (March 9, 2026) and has confirmed that it will deliver “the final trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie” before its theatrical release.

If today’s show goes anything like the previous Super Mario Galaxy Movie Direct shows, it will be a short and sweet story with introductory words from Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto and the heads of Illumination Studio before or after dropping the new and final trailer. Here’s hoping there’s some kind of surprise here, maybe something to do with the 40th anniversary of the Super Mario Bros. game, or just a magical plumber on his big day, but I’m not getting my hopes up beyond the new look of the movie itself.

Today’s Super Mario Galaxy Movie Direct is scheduled to go live at 2 pm PT/5 pm ET and you can watch it below with us:

Join us on Monday, Mar 9, at 2pm PT for a Nintendo Direct featuring the final trailer for the Super Mario Galaxy Movie. Please note that no game information will be included in this presentation.

The new Mario movie tops this, with new powers, new characters (Brie Larson’s Rosalina and Bowser Jr., voiced by Benny Safdie, to name a couple), and the first big-screen animated Yoshi. It opens in theaters on April 1.

Here’s a look at the official Super Mario Galaxy Movie posters and the brand new ones Nintendo just revealed ahead of today’s Direct:
