Here’s How Companies Are Making Modern Home Projects So Cheap

The drop in the price of electronic devices can come as a surprise to people living in the 1990s and beyond. TVs are a good example of this, as HD models were over $5,000. Now you can own a Walmart for $64. DVD players used to cost upwards of $800 or more, and now you can buy one on Amazon for $40. Home projectors are also falling, with a portable 720p model boasting ‘4K support’ and selling for $400 now down to $52 as of this writing.
The main reason for the price drop in home projectors, which should be bought used, is the improvement of technology. Many components, including LEDs and processing chips, were once produced in small quantities at a high cost. This put niche devices out of reach for everyday consumers, who didn’t want to pay nearly $2,000. But those same parts are now mass-produced, bringing costs down. Some of this is due to companies using plastic lenses instead of glass, which allows them to sell projectors at a lower price.
According to DataIntelo, a global market research firm, production costs have decreased due to heightened competition and price sensitivity. This forces manufacturers to simplify production and reduce costs to remain competitive. In fact, the projector market has grown from approximately $5.6 billion in 2023 to $8.9 billion in 2032. Also, consumer demand for smaller projectors with more features is leading to better components, which equates to lower maintenance and manufacturing costs.
Home projectors: growing demand and obstacles
Home projectors, once reserved for the boardroom, have seen a surge in demand from everyday consumers during the 2020 Covid-19 outbreak. As the lockdown keeps movie theaters closed, people are looking for ways to replicate the experience at home. That increase continued due to distance learning and later business meetings, which required presentations to be made remotely. But even as demand increased, purchases decreased, and many people decided to save their money for the more important things.
However, projectors have become more popular in recent years, leading some people to use them instead of their home TV. It’s much cheaper than using a large TV, which can cost thousands, compared to the cheapest projector on Amazon for about $400. Then there’s the problem of growing at any given time, which projectors can easily do, compared to TVs, which may need to be upgraded to larger models. For consumers who often broadcast content at home, projectors are a more practical choice.
But there are some drawbacks to replacing a TV with a home projector. First, projectors do not have the level of brightness that a TV does. So if you are watching a movie during the day and the light enters the room, your experience may be affected. Also, depending on the model, projectors may require routine maintenance, which can be expensive. Sound quality can also be an issue, especially if the projector’s speakers are of poor quality.
