Severance season 3 is coming: Here’s everything we know right now

It’s been almost a year since the season 2 finale of Severance left viewers in shock. Here’s everything we know so far about Severance season 3 and when you can expect its Apple TV premiere.

Severance Season 3 has been officially greenlit by Apple

Severance is one of the biggest hits Apple TV has ever had—even surpassing Ted Lasso in popularity.

So it should come as no surprise that Apple quickly renewed the show for another season.

The green light for Severance season 3 was announced when the season 2 finale aired.

Fortunately, the creative team behind the show didn’t wait for Apple’s official approval before starting work on the new season, writing first even before season 3 was picked up.

Writing for Severance season 3 began over a year ago, with a significant addition

Last February during the sit-down no The Hollywood ReporterBen Stiller shared that Severance season 3 is already “in progress” and the writers’ room was actively working on the show in LA.

Due to reported conflicts between creator Dan Erickson and writer-producer Mark Friedman during the first two seasons of Severance, Ben Stiller hired a new key.

Stiller negotiated with many non-writer producers to come in to shoot the third season before the WGA strike, and he ended up quietly hiring Beau Willimon, the creator of House of Cards who recently worked on the wonderful Andor for Disney+… So for a few months now, Willimon helped to make the back part of Season 2 and the template for Season 3, the show is very late in the schedule.

It sounds like, while Willimon made significant contributions in season 2, the upcoming season 3 is where we’ll see more of his strengths come into play.

Ben Stiller will not direct this time

Ben Stiller is the main creative force behind Severance, and that will continue in season 3.

But one important role it has filled historically is changing.

In interview no The Los Angeles TimesStiller said he won’t be directing any episodes of Severance season 3. The reason? A separate film project will take up too much of his time.

Stiller directed 11 episodes in Severance’s first two seasons—more than half the total number of episodes. So his absence from the director’s chair can make a big difference.

Shooting is expected to begin in April 2026

In an interview last fall, Patricia Arquette revealed expectations spring of 2026 The start of filming for Severance season 3.

Later, the official production schedule confirmed that the shooting will take place from April to December.

For a little context, Severance season 2 started production in October 2022 but didn’t appear on Apple TV until January 2025.

However, that long delay was mainly the result of major Hollywood strikes that stopped production abruptly after 7 out of 10 episodes had been shot.

When can you expect season 3 on Apple TV

Anyone who has followed Severance since its first season knows that the wait between seasons has been long.

Due to production problems, rewrites, and Hollywood strikes, almost three years passed between the first and second seasons of Severance.

Ben Stiller says that for season 3 he “hopes not to keep the audience waiting for three years this time.”

If the reported April 2026 production start is true, we shouldn’t expect to see the first game of the new season in the same year.

In fact, Severance season 3 will probably hit Apple TV mid 2027.

This 2027 return accounts for approximately 6-9 months of production after the film wraps in December. These ratings will coincide with season 2, assuming no strike-related delays.
