Fix Bluetooth Mouse or Keyboard Disconnecting in MacOS Tahoe

Some Mac users have noticed an annoying problem with recent macOS updates (including both MacOS Tahoe and Sequoia) where Bluetooth accessories such as a mouse or keyboard randomly disconnect, stop responding briefly, or disconnect for 10-30 seconds and then reconnect resulting in a long hold on using the cursor or keyboard. Some users have even reported that some Bluetooth devices refuse to connect after installing the latest macOS update on the Tahoe. The issue seems to mostly affect Bluetooth input hardware, including Apple devices and third-party devices, and some users will say that the mouse or keyboard will randomly stop connecting.
If your Bluetooth mouse or keyboard keeps disconnecting at any time on macOS Tahoe or macOS Sequoia, there are a few troubleshooting steps that may solve the problem.
Fix Bluetooth Mouse or Keyboard Disconnecting in MacOS Tahoe & Sequoia
If your Bluetooth mouse or keyboard intermittently disconnects, freezes, or automatically disconnects and reconnects, try the following troubleshooting steps to resolve the issue with macOS:
1: Replace or Charge the Batteries
The first thing you should do is replace or charge the keyboard or mouse batteries. When batteries are charged, get them to 100% charge. If the batteries are old, replace them with new, fully charged batteries.
This may sound obvious, but the battery life of a mouse or keyboard is usually so good that it is often overlooked as a reason why a keyboard or mouse cuts out, but battery problems alone can be responsible.
2: Turn Bluetooth off and on
Usually the easiest fix is to simply restart the Bluetooth connection:
- Open Control Center on Mac from the top right corner
- Click on Bluetooth
- Turn Bluetooth OFF
- Wait a few seconds
- Turn Bluetooth ON and ON
Once Bluetooth has reconnected, check to see if the mouse or keyboard behaves normally.
3: Remove and Re-Pair the Bluetooth Device
If the problem persists after making sure the battery is charged and Bluetooth has been toggled off and on, removing the accessory and pairing can often help resolve issues with irregular connections with Bluetooth devices:
- From the Apple menu open “System Settings”
- Go to “Bluetooth” and find the problem mouse or keyboard in the list of devices
- Click the “i” button and click on “Forget This Device”
- After removing the device, return the mouse or keyboard to pairing mode, then reconnect it to the Mac
4: Install Any Available macOS Updates
If there is a known Bluetooth problem, it is possible that Apple will fix the problem in a software update:
- Go to “System Settings” and then “General”
- Go to “Software Update” and install any available updates for macOS Tahoe or macOS Sequoia
It’s rare for Bluetooth problems to be related to system bugs, but it does happen.
5: Restart the Mac
A simple reboot can often fix random Bluetooth problems, and it’s the oldest troubleshooting trick in the book because it usually works:
- From the menu Apple select “Restart”
Of course if you’ve installed any system software updates recently, the Mac has already restarted.
If the disconnection problem persists despite troubleshooting, installing new macOS software updates may eventually solve the problem, although that’s not particularly helpful at the moment since new updates can be ways out.
If you’re experiencing Bluetooth disconnection and connection issues on macOS Tahoe, you’re not alone, as there are a variety of threads on the Internet with Apple’s Tahoe and Sequoia discussion posts, and elsewhere on the web.
It’s worth mentioning that sometimes a problem like this can be related to the device driver and related software, as happened not long ago with broken Logitech devices. In these cases, you need to obtain updated software directly from the manufacturer of the keyboard, mouse, or peripheral.
