Patagonia’s hiking backpack can be a rugged weekend bag for couples

Part of the brand’s 6-piece free wall kit, the two-person Wall Wall Pack 44L was designed by Patagonia specifically for big wall climbing.
And I’m not talking about climbing a local hill, but multi-layered routes where the crux may be several hundred meters above the ground, like the ones the company’s founder, Yvon Choinard, used to climb in the 1960s.

From direct logistics to weekend parking
At 44 liters, the pack has more than enough space for two people’s essentials, which is – surprise! – indeed what it was originally built for.
Patagonia designed a large interior to carry the gear of two hikers, and that capacity translates well to a couple (two friends, hiking partners, etc.) packing clothes, toiletries and a few extras for a short trip or weekend camping trip.

Large internal pockets and colour-coded zips help keep gear organised, which can mean separating riding hardware as easily as one person’s kit from another.
It’s built of granite, not a luggage carousel (yet…)
The exterior is deliberately minimalist, with scratch-resistant materials and a targeted profile designed to avoid snagging on rock or gear while being hauled up a wall.
The body fabric uses 420-denier recycled nylon with PU adhesive and a durable water-repellent finish without intentionally added PFAS, while foam wrap throughout the structure helps protect gears and adds extra abrasion resistance.
Reinforcement continues with front and rear web loops, designed for extra traction, which act as practical attachment points for extra kit on the go.
Low-profile shoulder straps and a waist belt make long hauls manageable and help keep the bag inside airport baggage-sized cages. Even better, the belt can be stored away when not in use.

Clip-in webbing loops around the sides and base of the pack allow for customized carrying, useful for hikers but equally useful when strapping on bulky camping gear or extra shoes during a trip.
At just over a kilogram, the Free Wall Pack remains light for its size while still feeling sturdy enough for use.
Patagonia also continues its sustainability approach here, using bluesign certified recycled fabrics and producing the pack in a Trade Certified factory.
The Wall Wall Pack 44L is available now from Patagonia US, Patagonia UK and Patagonia EU for $229 / £200 / €220 (~AU$320) in the new Weathered Stone spring colorway.
