How-To & Tips

Release Date, Specs, and Price Rumors

Apple is planning another update to the Mac mini in 2026, and early reports suggest that the next version will focus on faster performance rather than a visual redesign. The compact desktop has already received a major overhaul in late 2024, so the upcoming update will focus on new Apple Silicon chips, better connectivity, and possible storage upgrades while keeping the small 5-inch enclosure that many users love now.

Many consumers are now wondering if they should wait for the next generation Mac mini. That question makes sense because Apple has already introduced the M5 family of chips in some Macs as early as 2026, which means that the Mac mini is next in line for a refresh. If Apple follows its usual desktop refresh pattern, the next Mac mini will use the same processors and bring significant gains in graphics and AI performance.

Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman previously reported that Apple has smaller Mac models with M5 and M5 Pro chips planned for a 2026 production road. Recent reports have also referred to internal Apple files that talk about these processors in relation to the desktop machine, which reinforces the expectation that the Mac mini will receive the same silicon improvements that have recently arrived in the MacBook models.

The M5 and M5 Pro chips are expected in the next Mac mini

Apple will likely offer two processor options for the 2026 Mac mini. The base model should ship with the standard M5 chip, while the higher configuration will use the more powerful M5 Pro.

The M5 chip continues Apple’s 3-nanometer architecture but focuses more on graphics and AI processing. Apple redesigned the GPU and added dedicated hardware that accelerates tasks like image processing, video processing, and machine learning loads. Early benchmarks from the M5 laptops show a strong improvement in GPU output and storage speed compared to the previous generation.

The M5 Pro furthers performance by combining two chip dies into a single system on chip. This design maximizes processing power and improves multi-threaded performance in demanding workflows such as video editing, software development, and large creative projects. Reports describe an 18-core CPU architecture that includes six high-performance cores and twelve high-performance cores.

Expected performance improvements include:

  • Graphics come out 45 percent faster than the M4 generation
  • AI-related tasks that complete up to 3.5 times faster in supported applications
  • SSD read and write speeds increase significantly with the updated architecture
  • CPU performance improves by about 14 to 22 percent for common tasks

These changes suggest that the 2026 Mac mini will remain a solid desktop choice for developers, content creators, and users looking for a small but powerful computer.

Expected specs and configuration

Apple already increased the base memory of the Mac mini to 16GB when it released the M4 version in 2024, and that base will continue with the M5 models. Apple introduced that change to support more heavy tasks and modern AI workloads, and there is no reason for the company to change that decision.

Storage can vary significantly. Apple recently doubled the base storage on several MacBook models, so the Mac mini may follow suit and start with a 512GB SSD instead of the current 256GB slot.

Expected configuration options include:

  • 16GB RAM for the M5 model and higher memory for the Pro versions
  • Up to 32GB RAM in standard models and up to 64GB in Pro versions
  • Base storage starts at 512GB SSD
  • Up to 4TB of storage on M5 models and up to 8TB on M5 Pro configurations

Connectivity improvements also seem possible because Apple recently added new wireless technology to some Macs. The next Mac mini may include Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6, which could improve wireless performance and reduce latency when using accessories.

Thunderbolt support may be similar to Apple’s current lineup. The standard M5 Mac mini should include Thunderbolt 4, while the M5 Pro version may support Thunderbolt 5 for faster data transfer and a more powerful external display setup.

The design is expected to remain unchanged

Apple redesigned the Mac mini chassis in October 2024 and reduced the footprint to a 5×5 inch square enclosure. That redesign remains fresh, so Apple isn’t expected to change the exterior design in the 2026 refresh.

Reports suggest that Apple will keep the same aluminum housing and keep the existing color options without introducing any other finishes. This means that consumers should expect the same small desktop design that already fits easily on a desk or behind a monitor.

The hole structure will also remain normal. Apple has already added front-facing USB-C ports to the current generation, which has improved everyday use, and the company seems satisfied with that arrangement.

Expected port selections include:

  • Two front USB-C ports that support USB 3 at 10Gbps
  • 3.5mm headphone jack on the front
  • Three Thunderbolt ports are on the back
  • HDMI port
  • Gigabit Ethernet with optional 10Gb Ethernet upgrade

This setup allows the Mac mini to connect to multiple displays, external storage, and high-speed devices without requiring multiple adapters.

Possible price changes

Apple currently sells a base Mac mini with an M4 chip for $599 with 16GB of integrated memory and 256GB of storage. That price has helped the machine remain one of Apple’s most affordable Macs.

The starting price may change slightly in the next generation if Apple doubles the base storage to 512GB. Several recent Mac models have increased entry prices after Apple increased the capacity of the base storage, so the Mac mini follows a similar pricing strategy.

If Apple goes that route, the starting price could rise to around $699 for the base configuration with 512GB of storage. However, Apple has not confirmed any pricing plans, so the company may also maintain the current price if production adjustments reduce component costs.

Apple recently announced plans to move part of the Mac mini production to a Foxconn facility in Texas while continuing to manufacture units in Asia. This change could help Apple avoid some import taxes, although domestic production may increase production costs.

Another factor affecting the pricing strategy is Apple’s introduction of the MacBook Neo, which also starts at $599. Because that laptop includes a display, keyboard, and battery, Apple now has two products competing in the entry-level Mac category.

Possible release date

Apple released M5-powered MacBook models in early 2026, raising hopes that the Mac mini will get similar chips soon. However, Apple often releases laptops first and updates desktop Macs later in the product cycle.

The Mac mini also has an unusual development history. Some versions started a year apart, while others went for several years without changes. Apple even skipped the M3 generation entirely when the Mac mini went from the M2 to the M4 in 2024.

Current reports suggest that Apple will launch the M5 Mac mini sometime in the first half of 2026. A launch at the Worldwide Developers Conference in June seems likely because Apple often presents Mac hardware and major software announcements at that event.

Currently, the rumored timeline points to a mid-2026 release, which means the Mac mini could soon receive the same upgrades already seen in the latest MacBook lineup.
