Apple Music Play Full Song comes to TikTok

The integration of Apple Music and TikTok’s Play Full Song spells good news for social media-savvy music fans.

The TL;DR

  • Apple Music and TikTok have announced new “Play Full Song” and “Listening Group” integrations.
  • The former allows streaming of a full song within TikTok, while the latter encourages social streaming.
  • The features are expected to be introduced in the coming weeks.

Apple Music is among the most popular music streaming services on the market. By adding to its functionality, subscribers will be able to stream songs all within TikTok without leaving the app. To achieve this, Apple and TikTok have announced a new integration called “Play Full Song”, which is launching worldwide in the coming weeks.

When users find a track on TikTok’s For You Page or the song’s Audio Details Page, they will see a Play Full Song button. Tapping it opens the Apple Music player directly within TikTok, allowing subscribers to instantly stream the full track. Because this feature works on Apple’s MusicKit framework, playback still happens within Apple Music. That means that each stream counts as a paid play for Apple Music, ensuring that artists and rights holders receive benefits.

TikTok becomes a direct gateway to Apple Music

The merger gives Apple Music an advantage over rival music streaming services.

The integration aims to bridge the gap between finding music on TikTok and listening to a full song. Instead of jumping between apps, Apple Music subscribers can continue listening right away. For example, Apple Music’s in-app player allows users to listen to a full song found on TikTok and proceed to a personalized stream of recommended tracks. You can also save songs to Your Music and add tracks directly to existing Apple Music playlists.

Users who haven’t subscribed to Apple Music will be prompted to start a free three-month trial when they click the Play Full Song button. This approach gives Apple a unique way to subscribe within one of the world’s most popular social networks, an integration that no rival streaming service currently offers.

TikTok is one of the most popular social media platforms with nearly two billion users worldwide.

Play Song Full builds on TikTok’s existing Add to Music App feature, which allows users to save songs they find on streaming services like Apple Music, Spotify, Amazon Music, SoundCloud, Deezer, Anghami, Melon, and Tidal. TikTok claims users have saved more than 3 billion tracks through its music-adding app to date.

However, the new feature goes further than saving songs to a playlist. Apple Music CEO Ole Obermann, who previously served as TikTok’s global head of music, said the merger removes the tension between discovery and listening. “Getting into the music you love should feel effortless,” says Obermann. “With Play Full Song, Apple Music subscribers can easily go from discovering a track on TikTok to listening to it in full instantly, without breaking the flow.”

TikTok also introduces Listening Party

Apple Music has a huge library of songs and radio stations.

Alongside Play Full Song, TikTok and Apple Music are introducing another feature called Listening Party. This creates a shared listening environment within TikTok, allowing fans to hear an artist’s songs at the same time. During these sessions, listeners can interact in real time and interact directly with the artist.

The Global Head of Music Business Development at TikTok, Tracy Gardner, said the aim is to strengthen the connection between artists and fans. “TikTok is where the discovery of music and culture moves at the speed of society,” Gardner said. “Play Full Song gives fans a seamless way to go from discovery to long-term listening, and Listening Party provides a shared space to experience music together in real time.”

Indeed, TikTok has become one of the most influential platforms for music discovery, often pushing unknown tracks to global hits. By allowing users to stream full songs quickly, Apple Music can capture listeners when their curiosity is piqued. The move comes after TikTok shuts down its music streaming service temporarily in 2024. Instead of directly competing with streaming platforms, TikTok now seems ready to cooperate, with Apple Music getting the deepest integration so far. If the rollout is successful, TikTok could be one of the strongest drivers of Apple Music subscriptions.
