AirPods Max 2 vs. Sony WH-1000XM6: Should you get the $549 or $449 headphone?
Even after dropping the new iPhone 17e, the new iPad Air, and the new M5-powered MacBooks (including the new MacBook Neo), Apple wasn’t done with its product announcements. AirPods Max 2 came out on March 17, 2026, catching the tech world by surprise.
As the long-awaited successor to the AirPods Max 2020, the AirPods Max 2026 had a lot to prove. And with improved ANC, sound quality, support for lossless wired audio, and Precision Finding, I can say that Apple’s best headphones live up to expectations, for the most part.
The flaws start to show when you compare the AirPods Max 2 to the Sony WH-1000XM6, one of the most popular, critically acclaimed, and versatile headphones compatible with both Android and iOS devices. If you’re considering one of the two headphones, we’ve listed all the key specifications, as well as the main advantages each offers over the other, to help you make an informed decision.
AirPods Max 2 vs. Sony WH-1000XM6: Price and Availability
Priced at $549, AirPods Max 2 will be available for pre-orders starting March 25, 2026. Deliveries will begin in early April. They are available in five colors: Midnight, Starlight, Blue, Orange, and Purple (my favorite).
The Sony WH-1000XM6 launched in May 2025 for $449. However, they are currently available on the company’s official website for $399.99, making them $150 cheaper than the AirPods Max 2, and more affordable for consumers. You can get the headphones in four colors: Black, Platinum Silver, Midnight Blue, and Sand Pink.

AirPods Max 2 offers smart software and deep Apple integration
Like the original AirPods Max, the second-generation headphones make an impression before you put them on. The aluminum and stainless steel ear cups and mesh canopy headband outdo the plastic and resin frames on Sony headphones. You also get a Digital Crown (borrowed from the Apple Watch) for precise volume and playback controls, something I’d choose over a touch panel any day.
With Apple’s custom 40 mm drivers and a new full-range amplifier, AirPods Max 2 claims to offer cleaner, more detailed sound, and a wider, more immersive soundstage. Although the supported codec (AAC) has not yet developed, the flagship headphones provide lossless 24-bit/48 kHz audio through a wired connection (USB-C), which appeals to audiophiles and casual iPhone users alike. And no, the XM6s do not support audio via USB-C.
At the heart of the AirPods Max 2 is the Apple H2 chip (which debuted with the AirPods Pro 2), which enables 1.5x better ANC than the 2020 AirPods Max. It also enables smart audio modes like Transparency, Adaptive Audio (a smart combination of ANC and Transparency), Conversation Awareness, and Loud Noise Reduction. The list of software-inspired features for AirPods Pro also includes Personal Volume, Voice Isolation, Personal Spatial Audio with Dolby Atmos, and a camera remote.
One of the most talked about features of AirPods Pro 3 – Live Translation – is also available on AirPods Max 2. Whether it’s useful or not depends on where you are. You also get Logic Pro integration that allows for studio-quality recording. Finally, the integrated U2 chip enables Precision Finding through Apple’s Find My network when you’ve left your headphones in a drawer or bag and forgotten.
If you’re an iPhone user, there’s no better pair of headphones that can offer a premium, comprehensive feature set, and deeper software integration (including automatic device switching) than the AirPods Max 2. However, the price — $549 — seems too steep and might push you to get the AirPods Pro 3 instead.
Sony’s WH-1000XM6 is highly functional, versatile, and durable
Since then, the WH-1000XM6 fold flat (something the AirPods Max 2 can’t). Combined with a hard-shell magnetic carrying case, they’re hands-down, on-the-go headphones. The plastic construction doesn’t feel as premium, but it results in a much lighter body (246 grams compared to 386 grams), making the headphones more comfortable for extended movie sessions or binge sessions.
And yes, the XM6s feature a 3.5 mm headphone jack, unlike the AirPods. Another feature where the WH-1000XM6 beats AirPods Max 2 for many users is the LDAC support for true wireless Hi-Res audio (up to 990 kbps) and LC3 via Bluetooth LE Audio.
The headphones have 30 mm carbon fiber drivers, which, combined with DSEE Extreme upscaling, a full 10-band graphic equalizer (something I like more than audio presets), and 360 Reality Audio, which offers much more control over the sound than Apple’s limited options.
In our review of the XM6s, we mentioned that the headphones offer significantly better ANC than the XM5s (thanks to 12 microphones), but they still lag behind the Bose QuietComfort Ultra, which remains the benchmark to beat. Sony also offers features such as Ambient Sound Mode (an attractive answer to the transparency mode on AirPods), Auto NC Optimizer, Quick Attention Mode, and Speak-to-Chat, which are familiar but not at all compatible with the tracking and understanding of AirPods.
However, the WH-1000XM6 redeems itself with its 30-hour battery life (with ANC), which trumps the AirPods Max’s 20-hour runtime. If you’re running out of time, three minutes of charging gives you three hours of playback on Sony’s latest headphones.
Finally, the XM6’s compatibility with many operating systems (Android, Windows, iOS, macOS) and their support for various voice assistants (Google Assistant, Alexa, Siri) make them the most versatile headphones in 2026. The AirPods Max 2 are sure to be better for Apple users, but for everyone else, the WH-1000XM001 headphones are the best, least expensive XM6s. price: $449).
Remember: XM6s do not support LDAC and LE Audio / LC3 when paired with iOS or macOS devices. Go with AirPods Max 2 if you own an iPhone, or Sony WH-1000XM6 if you own any other smartphone, and you won’t regret your decision.
