An OpenAI ‘Superapp’ for integrating ChatGPT, Codex, and the Atlas browser

OpenAI has a Mac “superapp” in development that combines its ChatGPT app, Codex coding platform, and Atlas browser, reports The Wall Street Journal ($).

The All-in-one application concept is to simplify the user experience, following the launch of several independent products, some of which have never met OpenAI customers. The company is also trying to bounce back after the recent success of its biggest rival, Anthropic.

OpenAI executives are said to be looking at areas to prioritize as it focuses on creating agent AI capabilities within a new superapp that can run automatically on a user’s computer to perform various tasks such as writing code and analyzing data.

At a public meeting last week, OpenAI’s chief applications officer Fidji Simo reportedly told employees that they couldn’t afford to be distracted by “side questions” given Anthropic’s rapid success in winning business customers and coders. From the report:

An OpenAI spokesperson said the new “superapp” will allow teams within OpenAI to work more closely together, and help the research unit focus its efforts on developing one central product. In the coming months, the company expects to add new “agent” capabilities within its Codex app to help with productivity-related tasks beyond coding before integrating ChatGPT and the Atlas browser into the superapp as well.

OpenAI unveiled a series of major initiatives last year, such as its Sora video program and the acquisition of Jony Ive’s AI hardware business. However, since then, Anthropic has received a strong boost from the success of Code Claude and Cowork offerings.

I The WSJ The report did not provide a timeline for the launch of OpenAI’s so-called superapp, but said the company’s ChatGPT app will remain unchanged.
