Death Stranding 2 is causing overheating issues on some PS5 consoles. Here’s what we know.

Death Stranding 2: On the Beach it’s been out for almost a week, and it’s won over fans and critics alike. It currently sits at a 90% critical rating and a 100% player rating on OpenCritic, and is shaping up to be one of the contenders for this year’s Game of the Year.
The PS5 exclusive from Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima is the sequel to his 2019 game, which tells the story of Sam Porter, who tries to reconnect the United States of America after the world is destroyed by the souls of the dead roaming the Earth. Death of 2 it improves many of the original features, but it seems that some players are having issues with the game, causing their PS5s to shut down.
Reddit thread on Death Stranding The subreddit asked if other players were experiencing PS5 overheating while playing the game.
Death Stranding 2 – PS5 Burns On Map Screen Only? from r/DeathStranding
“I’ve been playing the game on a basic PS5 and it’s running great – the graphics are amazing and I’ve had no issues during normal play,” the poster wrote. “But as soon as I pause the game and the map screen appears, the fan suddenly goes into overdrive, and I get an overheating warning. It’s weird because everything else is fine, even during long game sessions. But when I bring up the map and start planning a route, the fan suddenly goes crazy and I get an overheating warning.”
Kojima Productions did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the issue.
Players in the series who have experienced this issue have stated that it occurred when they removed the map from the game. One poster suggests that because the map screen has the framerate turned on, it causes the system to go into overdrive, thus raising the internal temperature. According to the comments, it seems to only affect the regular PS5, not the PS5 Pro or PS5 Slim, and it doesn’t seem to matter if the PS5 is portrait or landscape.
Some people have suggested not leaving the map screen on for that long, as the longer it stays on, the more likely the PS5 will overheat.
One of the key designs for the PS5 was dealing with cooling, as the PS4 was notorious for having loud fans whenever the console started to heat up. Sony used a double-sided fan, a large heatsink with heat pipes, and liquid metal between the heatsink and the SoC to ensure that heat is transferred efficiently.
The PS5 typically runs between 65°C and 75°C (149°F and 167°F) for most games. There is a point at which the system determines that the temperature is too hot and will trigger an overheating warning.
PS5 overheating can lead to many problems if not fixed, according to technical maintenance company Asurion. It can slow down the console, wear out the components, and even lead to the PS5 breaking.
A few simple tips to help prevent the PS5 from overheating include making sure the console is in a well-ventilated area, adding a cooler, or opening it up for easy cleaning.
