2026 Asus ROG Zephyrus G16 GU606 explained (Panther Lake, RTX 5090)

Asus is updating its popular ROG Zephyrus G16 series of high-performance laptops for 2026, and we’ll discuss what’s new in this article.

We’ve reviewed all the ROG Zephyrus notebooks launched over the years, so we know where this series could have been improved. But most of the changes for 2026 are incremental improvements, as this generation is largely built on the same chassis with the same features and ergonomics.

Among the important changes is the addition of a brighter OLED display and a clash of hardware specs and power: the Panther Lake Core Ultra 9 platform paired with RTX 5000 graphics, up to RTX 5090 at 160W TGP – that’s much higher than the Zephyrus G16 of 2025 and ProArt and P15power full-fledged P15W models. TGP.

Here’s the 2026 Zephyrus specs sheet, next to the 2025 model, and we’ll get more in-depth below.

As mentioned earlier, the 2026 and 2025 Zephyrus G16 models share the same premium unibody chassis, arguably among the best-feeling options in the Windows space today.

Aesthetically, Asus offers both in light gray or dark gray variants. Both have this Slash Lighting bar of LEDs on the lid, the 2026 generation offers an updated implementation with additional control points (the same number of LEDs, but each one controlled individually now, while in the past it could only be controlled in groups). I still wish they had finished it completely; the lid can look very clean in a simple design, as it does in the ProArt P16, which is the same chassis but in an all black way. No matter what it is.

Another incremental update of the 2026 generation is the revised hinges, which adjust the torque for every opening movement – it should make the hinges soft when you lift the display, then tighten them gradually to keep the display in the open position. I didn’t have a problem with the way the hinges worked in the past, but rather with the way there is no notch in the front mouth and that the opening angle is limited to only 130 degrees. These features have not changed.

That’s because the general chassis design hasn’t changed, as the cooling is still placed entirely on the rear edge – but the internal cooling module has been updated – more on that later. That also means the keyboard is still minimalist, case-focused and lacks a NumPad, but it’s surrounded by some of the best speakers available on Windows devices today. And IO is lined up on the edge, with all the right ports, including USB-C on both sides and an SD card reader.

Then we come to that new display, the latest generation OLED from Samsung, and it’s a regular OLED, not a Tandem OLED. It allows continuous and high brightness levels, reaching up to 1100-nits, making the laptop more usable in bright light conditions and improving HDR capabilities in videos and games. At the same time, it is still 2.5K resolution with 240Hz refresh and 0.2ms response, VRR and GSync, very suitable for games. We will have to test for any trade-offs, however, such as flickering or burning due to high light levels.

Other novelties are inside, where the hardware has been updated to the latest Intel Panther Lake Core Ultra Series 3 platform, up to the Core Ultra 9 H processor. That is paired with up to 64 GB of LPDDR5x-8533 memory and SSD storage (with gen5 slot), as well as separate GPUs for the high-end RTX 5000, up to the RTX 5090.

In the last generations of G16, Asus offered two variants of this notebook: thick and heavy with more advanced cooling for high-end models (5070Ti and above in 2025 models), and thin, light with basic cooling for low-end models (5070 and below). The top-end design gets a refresh for the 2026, but I’m not sure if these changes carry over to the bottom-end chassis – we’ll update when we know more.

The upper-tier models offered up to 140W load power on the 2025 G16s, up to 115W TGP on the GPU. The 2026 update bumps power to 175W crossload, and 160W TGP on the GPU. That’s a big update, and I believe that’s made possible by the updated thermal module with a larger vapor chamber and a wider profile that allows for more space inside.

I’m looking forward to testing the overall performance gains and general thermal behavior of this updated generation – I expect gains of up to 20% at sustained loads, and higher temperatures than before. However, as long as you keep the laptop propped up on the desk, both internal and external temperatures were excellent for the 2025 models, so there is potential headroom for higher thermals to be put to good use here.

Accordingly, if you are interested in the AMD iteration of this notebook, it is not offered with a Zephyrus chassis, but with the Asus ProArt P16 (which does not receive an update on the Gorgon Point hardware, but that is not a problem given that the development of the Ryzen 9 AI HX 470 HX 470 HX 470 HX 470 HX 470 HX 470 HX 470)

All in all, while the Zephyrus G16 2026 may not look like much of an update at first glance, the brighter display and updates to the CPU/GPU/RAM/SSD combine to make it a more powerful notebook than the 2025 generation.

That’s it for now, but look forward to our detailed review of this updated 2026 Zephyrus G16 GU606 series in the next few weeks. These laptops should be available in stores as soon as the first months of the year, but expect high prices, which are greatly increased by the current RAM/SSD conditions. Expect more notebooks to demand a premium this year than their predecessors at launch, and that will put the top-spec 5090 model at over 4K USD/4.5K EUR.
