2026 Asus Zenbook DUO UX8407AA update explained – smaller, more powerful

Two years ago Asus introduced the Zenbook DUO, a Zenbook series with a full-size 14-inch OLED display. Last year, they refreshed the existing chassis with slightly faster hardware.

This year, however, they’re completely revamping the Zenbook DUO with a more compact design and updated hinges that bring the two screens closer together, faster high-powered hardware, improved cooling, punchier sound, and a larger 99Wh battery, among others.

I got to spend time with the first sample of this Zenbook DUO UX8407AA series, and gathered my first impressions in this article. A full review will follow in the coming weeks.

But first, here is the specs sheet for the 2026 and 2025 Zenbook DUO models, to better understand how these two have changed.

This second-generation Zenbook Duo chassis refines the previous iteration in several ways.

Here are some photos of the two together, generation 2026 on the left.

The new variant is more compact by about 5%, thanks to new hinges that bring the two displays closer together and allow them to open without the gap of the previous generation. That means the two displays now sit on the same plane when the laptop is open, and the bezel between the screens is smaller, about 9 mm in total.

On the other hand, the new Zenbook has the same weight as the previous one, and that’s because it includes updated cooling and a larger 99Wh battery split in the main chassis and part behind the display.

The overall performance of this series remains the same. You get two displays with a paper keyboard inserted in between. With a physical keyboard attached, this feels like a regular laptop, just bigger than a regular Zenbook.

However you do get to remove the keyboard and use it over Bluetooth, and you can use the kickstand on the back of the laptop to put the two displays vertically or horizontally for dual display use. I still find it more practical with two displays stacked one on top of the other, as otherwise you get two 14-inch displays in portrait mode, and that’s pretty useless in everyday life. But the side-by-side mode is much more comfortable now with the updated hinge mechanism.

Besides, I will also mention that the outer case of this generation is made of Ceraluminum, in dark gray color, with limited markings and rounded corners, like in the Zenbook A14/A16 models. This finish should wear well and resist smudges and scratches better than the traditional aluminum case of the previous generation. However, you may not really like the feel of Ceraluminum in comparison; it feels less like real pieces of aluminum, the kind offered in previous Zenbooks or the Zephyrus or MacBook. You’ll have to experience it in real life to understand what I mean.

The displays on this new Zenbook DUO UX8407 series are still 14-inch 16:10, but the updated Lumina Pro OLED panels have a higher brightness and an anti-reflective layer that cuts through some glare and reflections. This coating actually makes a difference in light areas, but this is not yet a matte implementation by any means.

The beautiful displays are accompanied by updated sound, with two main dual speakers and two front-firing tweeters hidden near the hinge. Sound quality and volume have been significantly improved over the previous generation Zenbook DUO.

As for that keyboard folio, it includes a proper Zenbook 14-inch keyboard and a larger-than-ever touchpad. Asus has also smoothed the edges, a feature your wrists will notice on a laptop as thick as this one.

It still works on Bluetooth or connects directly to a laptop with a set of pogo pins, the pogo pins have been redesigned and are now magnetic. The keys on this reviewed paper have a firm feel to them, though, unlike the smooth feel of most Zenbook keyboards. That should help prevent smudges, but I’m not sure yet if it affects the typing experience in any way or not. I’ll know more when I get a review unit.

Hardware is an additional part of this puzzle, with the implementation of Intel Panther Lake. Asus will offer the series with Core Ultra 7 355H, Ultra 9 386H, or Ultra X9 388H, up to 32 GB of LPDDR5x-9600 memory and gen4 SSD storage. The X9 includes Arc B390 graphics with 12 Xe Cores, while the rest of the Arc graphics have only 4 Xe Cores.

The hardware runs up to 45W TDP on the 2026 Zenbook Duo models, though. In comparison, the Arrow Lake 2025 field reached 35-38W continuous. Newer hardware and higher power settings should translate to a 10-25% performance gain on sustained loads. For most work intended to handle more than just casual use, that’s important.

Of course, the 45W configuration is most likely in Speed Full mode with noise, and I look forward to testing the power of this implementation in medium and quiet profiles.

I’m curious about the heat capacity of this small chassis – the previous version did a good job of keeping the temperature down, but the new model is a bit smaller and runs on more power. I wasn’t able to open the preview unit, but Asus is talking about increased cutouts on the rear panel and larger fans. Given the format with the display over the components, they have certainly made some changes to the cooling to comfortably promote the high power design.

While looking at the internals, I should also mention the updated battery in this DUO, with a total capacity of 99 Wh. That’s impressive for a 14-incher, and Asus has increased the battery without increasing the overall weight, which is still 1.65 kilograms including the keyboard folio. The battery is partly inside the main chassis and partly behind the display, but the two sides are still well balanced, and the laptop doesn’t feel too heavy by any means.

Of course, having two displays requires more power, so your expectation of battery life while using both displays should be realistic. In Laptop mode, however, this could be one of the most durable 14-inch laptops out there.

All in all, this is a significant refinement of a proven concept, a dual-display laptop available in stores today. You’re paying a nice premium for the format and display, though, and I’d expect that premium to be higher than the 2025 model (which originally sold for $1999). Stay tuned for our detailed review, and let me know what you think of this update so far.
