The Scooms 100% Pure Cotton mattress protector is stylish, made entirely of cotton and provides a good and comfortable night’s sleep. I think it is one of the best mattress protectors on the market but it is not waterproof and comes at a higher price than many of its competitors.
Is it worth the money? In many ways, yes but with the caveat that if you are looking for a waterproof protector, this is not the option for you. Want to know more? Then read on…
Scooms 100% Cotton Pure Protector: What you need to know
The protector comes in handy packaging and comes in a drawstring bag for easy storage. The protector itself is made from cotton, with a 200 thread count and 200gsm cotton filling to provide a comfortable fit. The stretchy skirt, which is also 100% cotton, is designed to accommodate mattresses up to 40cm deep: I currently sleep on a 33cm Slumberland Air 6.0 mattress with a 6cm Dorma Full Forever topper, and found the Scooms fitted like a dream. The protector is also OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certified, which means it is completely free of harmful substances.
The Scooms protector is not a budget option. From £55 for a single, this rises to £65 for a double, £75 for a king, £85 for a king and £105 for an Emperor. This makes it one of the more expensive protectors we’ve reviewed: while it’s only £20 more than the Nectar double mattress protector (£45), a Panda Bamboo mattress protector of the same size costs £37 while the Dusk Luxury Quilted mattress protector retails for just £20.
There is no trial period, but the protector comes with a one-year warranty in case of manufacturing issues. It is washable at 30-40°C and can be air dried or tumble dried on low heat.
How well does it work?
To ensure consistency, I ran the same tests on all mattress protectors to see how waterproof they were. I put a mattress protector between two old polycotton sheets and mixed instant coffee granules with water in various increments (1.5tsp of coffee to 25ml of water, 3tsp to 50ml, 4.5tsp to 75ml and 6tsp to 100ml), before pouring these solutions over the top sheet. I then waited five minutes before measuring the size of the stain on the protector compared to any stain on the bottom sheet where the coffee came out.
Like the Dusk protector I mentioned earlier, the Scooms 100% Pure Cotton mattress protector is not designed to be waterproof. As such, it wasn’t a big surprise to see that the coffee had broken through and spread across the stain – for example, a 100ml solution produced a 36x30cm stain on the protector, and a 43x30cm stain on the bottom sheet. Fortunately, it washes well, and after one wash at 40 ° C, the stains are gone. I also found it air dried faster than the Dusk protector I reviewed previously.
Despite being waterproof, the breathable cotton design is more than enough to keep your mattress free of dead skin cells and body oils, as long as you wash it regularly. But again, I would not recommend this protector for private training!
How is sleep?
The Scooms Defender was completely silent to sleep, with no annoying squeaking noises and a smooth finish from dusk to dawn. And it doesn’t move at all at night, thanks to that deep skirt that keeps it tight. With its generous size, it covers my mattress well and feels luxurious to the touch. I noticed a few loose threads, but this is probably optional.
My hot sleeping husband found this blanket cool and comfortable due to the 100% cotton construction (which is more breathable than other synthetics). It also felt cool to the touch and regulated our temperature well throughout the night – keeping him cool and me (the resident reptile) completely comfortable. So, it’s a great all-rounder, whether you sleep hot or cold.
Should I buy Scooms 100% pure cotton protector?
The Scooms 100% Pure Cotton mattress protector is a great choice for those looking to add a little luxury protection to their mattress. Well made, quiet to sleep on and generously sized to fit all mattresses. Hot sleepers will love it too.
This means, it is waterproof and not far from the price. Good quality, all-cotton construction is worth the long-term investment, but if your budget is tight, consider Dusk’s Luxury Quilted mattress protector. And if waterproofing is a priority, choose Nectar or Panda protectors.
