Garmin Connect 5.22 adds live device battery status

Garmin has released version 5.22 of the Connect app on iOS, and it comes with a tweak that people have been asking for. Finally you can see the live battery levels of your devices in the device list.
Not exactly breaking news. But this is one of those changes that feels long overdue. When you open the device switcher in the latest version of Garmin Connect, each connected watch now shows its current battery percentage. It sounds like a small thing, but it removes a small daily annoyance that has been there for years.
Live battery levels at last
As long as the device is connected, it updates live, so you can quickly see how much money is left. No need to go into menus or wait for the sync to finish.
If you use more than one Garmin device, this makes a real difference. Switching between a Forerunner, Edge, or something like the Venu used to mean guessing or diving into each device’s page individually. Now the information is just there, where you would expect it to be.
Nothing has changed in terms of actual battery tracking. Garmin has already done this part well. This update is about how that data is displayed, but that’s the whole point. The app eventually stops hiding what you’re checking all the time.
What makes the whole thing funny is that this is not a new idea for Garmin. Back in the early days of Connect Mobile around 2013 to 2015, the battery status would sometimes appear in a basic way when the device was connected. You may see an incorrect icon or indicator during synchronization, depending on the device and platform. It was inconsistent and often vague, but the idea was there. Over time, that view quickly disappeared, and the battery information was hidden instead. This update feels like Garmin is bringing back something that should never have been lost.
Only on iOS for now
Alongside the battery change, Garmin has made a few subtle UI changes and bolted on a few bug fixes in this release. As usual, the company does not include details of what these are.
Currently, version 5.22 is available for iOS. An Android release has yet to appear, which is typical of Garmin Connect updates. Android users will likely see similar changes rolled out soon, assuming there are no platform-specific issues.
Live battery levels in the device list will not change how you train or recover. What it does is remove friction. It saves time and reduces uncertainty, especially before a workout or a trip. Good software isn’t just about adding new metrics or subscriptions. Sometimes it’s about revealing information that should have been obvious all along.
