Apple shared a first look inside the Houston Mac mini production facility

Apple has shared new details about its Mac mini production plan in the United States, as well as new photos and video from its Houston facility, where assembly will begin later this year. The company has confirmed that the Mac mini models will be built at the same facility where it already produces advanced AI servers, marking a wider expansion of its US manufacturing base.

The move builds on Apple’s earlier announcement about expanding server production in Texas. At the same time, the company said it is accelerating the rollout of AI servers that power Apple Intelligence, indicating that hardware and artificial intelligence efforts will grow side by side in the Houston area.

As we have reported before, in the interview he had with The The Wall Street JournalApple’s Chief Operating Officer, Sabih Khan, shared the context during a tour of the Foxconn facility in Houston, Texas.

“We are very happy to tell you that later this year we will be starting to produce the Mac mini right here in this space,” said Khan.

Expansion in Houston

Apple CEO Tim Cook said the company is expanding its presence in the city while ramping up AI server production.

“Apple is deeply committed to the future of American manufacturing, and we are proud to expand our facility in Houston with production of the Mac mini beginning later this year,” Cook said.
“We started shipping advanced AI servers from Houston ahead of schedule, and we’re excited to accelerate that work even further.”

The company added that bringing the Mac mini assembly to Houston would double the size of the campus. Apple also plans to open a 20,000 square foot Advanced Manufacturing Center in the city later this year. The facility, which is still under construction, will provide ongoing training in advanced manufacturing techniques to students, supply chain workers, and American businesses. Apple experts will teach the same processes used to build Apple products.

US broad strategy

Apple currently makes most of its Mac systems in Asia, including China, Malaysia, Vietnam and Thailand. It built the Mac Pro in Austin, Texas, though that system faced challenges after its 2013 launch. The Mac mini remains a low-volume product compared to the MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, and iMac, but demand has increased as more users use AI software on desktop machines.

Apple said the Mac mini assembly strategy will be similar to that of the Mac Pro, with US models built in Texas and versions for other markets produced in Asia. The company does not manufacture high-volume products such as the iPhone or iPad in the US, although some items, such as display glass, are available domestically.

Apple released several photos and a video tour of the Houston plant to highlight the expansion. This announcement also comes as Apple continues its extensive investment plans in the US and strengthens its position in American manufacturing.
