This SUV Gets Best Gas Mileage for 2026

For decades, the average US consumer was misled by an obsession with gas-guzzling, fuel-inefficient SUVs and small trucks. Americans bought these cars for the various advantages they offered, including better road visibility and perceived safety due to their size. There were even some men who thought that driving a big truck made them manly. Lately, though, Americans seem to be waking up to the idea that cars and trucks don’t need to burn oodles of gasoline. That’s why there are so many SUVs on the market today that offer great fuel economy without compromising on some of the features that made Americans love SUVs in the first place.

The reasons for modern SUVs offering more fuel efficient figures mainly come down to two things: the shift to hybrid powertrains and the improved performance of traditional internal combustion engines. The first reason alone has ensured that the new SUV models are demanding mpg numbers that would have made the old generation hatchback proud.

Now, if you’re looking for an SUV with high fuel economy numbers, you’ll probably notice that these are pure EVs and plug-in hybrids (PHEVs). If we exclude these two categories of SUVs and focus on gasoline-powered models — including HEVs (or mild hybrids) that use a gasoline engine and an electric motor but do not need charging — the most fuel-efficient SUV is the 2026 Kia Niro.

Now, it’s no secret that Niro has become a chart-topper in this category in 2025 as well. For the same reason, the 2026 model has not changed much from the 2025 model.

The 2026 Kia Niro is in a class of its own

With an EPA-certified combined mileage of 53 MPG, the Kia Niro’s reign at the top of the fuel efficiency chart continues unabated. The same car also offers an impressive fuel economy of 53 mpg in the city and 54 mpg on the highway. The main reason why Kia continues to dominate is the fuel-efficient 1.6-liter 4-Cylinder and full parallel hybrid system available in the 2025 model. This combination is powerful enough to produce 139 hp and 195 lb-ft of torque. The Front Wheel Drive SUV has an 11.1-gallon fuel tank, which means the tank can give it a range of over 580 miles.

Moving forward, those familiar with the Niro will know that Kia will offer the car until 2025 with three powertrain options: a pure EV, a plug-in hybrid, and a mild hybrid (HEV) variant. The biggest change for the 2026 is that the plug-in hybrid model is no longer available in the US market. As for the mild-hybrid version, Kia offers the Niro in four variants. At the bottom of the price range are the entry-level LX and EX models, priced at $27,390 and $30,190, respectively. Top trims include the SX and SX Touring models, which will set buyers back $33,390 and $35,790, respectively.

Although Kia does not provide a breakdown of its sales figures by subvariants, it is confirmed that the Kia Niro lineup as a whole is doing very well in the US The Niro lineup sold 31,182 units in 2025 alone, a slight increase from 2024 (30,094).

The most fuel-efficient SUVs of 2026

There is no doubt that, in terms of fuel economy numbers, the Kia Niro sits in a class of its own. However, for someone who doesn’t really want this SUV, but still wants fuel-efficient or mid-range hybrid SUVs, other options currently available include the Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid (42 mpg), 2026 Kia Sportage Hybrid (also 42 mpg), 2026 FWD mp2 CRxus CR2 (2026 FWD Lexus CR2) NX 350h (40 mpg), and 2026 Ford Escape AWD HEV (39 mpg).

The 2026 Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid is the second most fuel-efficient sedan behind the Kia Niro and claims an excellent EPA-certified mileage of 42 mpg. In our review of this 2026 model year SUV, we found that the vehicle delivered an average of 39.1 mpg, below its EPA rating. The second Kia vehicle on this list – the 2026 Kia Sportage Hybrid – matches the Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid in full range, with prices starting at around $30,490.

The 2026 Honda CR-V has just entered this list for 2026, and it goes neck and neck with the second place holder from 2025, the Lexus NX 350h. As mentioned earlier, both of these SUVs have EPA-certified 40 mpg fuel economy figures, which are great numbers, no matter how you look at them.

Still, with today’s market flooded with fuel-efficient, tech-rich SUVs at every price point, there’s never been a better time to get behind the wheel of one.
