macOS 27: All the Rumors So Far

macOS 27 is still months away, but there are already a few rumors about the upcoming software update, as detailed below.

We expect the first beta of macOS 27 to be deployed to developers during WWDC 2026 in June, with a public beta to follow in July. After beta testing, the update should be released to all users with a compatible Mac in September.

macOS 26 is known as macOS Tahoe, but the name of macOS 27 has not yet been leaked.

Siri improvements

macOS 27 will reportedly include a full Siri chatbot that you can have back-and-forth conversations with. This would make Siri similar to OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini. Due to the delay, macOS 27 may include at least some of the Siri customization features that Apple previewed from WWDC 2024.

For example, Apple showed a user asking Siri about their mother’s flight and lunch reservations based on information obtained from the Mail and Messages apps. This functionality was previewed on the iPhone, but will roll out to the iPad and Mac.

Other features of Apple Intelligence

Last month, Apple and Google announced that Google Gemini will support future Apple Intelligence features, and that will go beyond a personal version of Siri. However, what features are coming remains to be seen.

Touch Interface

BloombergMark Gurman this week reported that Apple is preparing a touch-optimized version of macOS for the rumored MacBook Pro with a touchscreen.

For example, if the user touches a button or control on the screen, the report said that the appropriate set of commands will immediately appear in the menu around their finger. And when a user taps on an item in the menu bar at the top of the screen, the report said the controls will expand to make it easier to select them with a finger.

Gurman expects the MacBook Pro with a touchscreen to be released in late 2026, so this touch configuration will come to macOS 27. However, the changes may be hidden until the MacBook Pro touchscreen is introduced.

Improved Stability

macOS 27 will reportedly be similar to 2009’s Mac OS X Snow Leopard, in the sense that Apple is apparently focused on improving “core quality and performance.” Apple is expected to implement many bug fixes and stability improvements, and there may be some much-needed Liquid Glass design improvements.

No Intel Macs

Last year, Apple announced that macOS Tahoe will be the last release of macOS for Intel-based Macs, which means that macOS 27 will only be compatible with Apple silicon Macs with the M1 chip and new ones. However, Apple will likely continue to release security fixes for other Intel-based Macs for at least a few more years.

No AirPort Time Capsule Support

Starting with macOS 27, Macs won’t support AirPort Time Capsule or any other storage drives that use the Apple Filing Protocol (AFP), according to a warning Apple displayed in macOS Tahoe. Time Capsule backups will require a storage drive that supports current file sharing protocols such as SMBv2 and SMBv3.
