See & Feel
The Final Audio DX4000CL takes its design inspiration from the long-defunct Sonarous line of headphones. The latter returns to this style of construction with the DX4000CL. The DX4000CL is built with durability and long-term use in mind. Its housing is assembled without adhesives, instead using precision screws and O-rings to allow modular repair and maintenance, reducing stress on components over time. The earcups and headband use 30 mm thick synthetic leather and the memory foam earpads provide a secure seal and distribute pressure comfortably, even during extended listening sessions. Overall, the fit strikes a balance between strong holding power for acoustic harmony and comfort suitable for long, focused listening sessions.
Design
At the core of the Final Audio DX4000CL is a newly developed 40mm dynamic driver with a Japanese paper-carbon composite diaphragm, designed for low distortion, natural timbre, and fast transient response. Final also includes an internal diffuser structure to manage sound and reduce internal reflections, helping the DX4000CL deliver a presentation that feels incredibly open to closed headphones.
Sound stage
In terms of spatial accuracy and localization, the Final DX4000CL has an excellent display. The imaging is advanced, the communication tools are focused on hyperspecific areas in all left and right channels. Their spread isn’t all that impressive about it, though. While it features good separation, the headroom provided is not that great. All instruments are very graceful and speak for their placement throughout the mix. It comes across as natural and real, without feeling simplistic or straightforward. Immersion is easier to hear when the stereo image is as refined as it is on the DX400CL.
Nothing seems to float, and it doesn’t give you that holographic feeling that other headphones like to impress you with. It may not feature the greatest soundstage with interior depth and surrounds, but the level of precision the DX4000CL displays is enough to get you fully immersed.
The Low End
The low end of the DX4000CL is very powerful. They don’t take a ton of light, but deliver when asked. The notes are made individually, acting as a support system for the rest of the sound signature. Naturally, the bass has a natural flavor with a touch of warmth. There is good energy in these frequencies, but their impact is not great. The DX4000CL can vary in punch depending on how aggressive the low end of your chosen track is. Mid-bass frequencies are very soft, but sub-bass still comes with a satisfying rumble. Strummed bass notes are booming and clear, but the bass textures from the synths aren’t detailed. The DX4000CL is more natural in its timbre and sounds better at lower frequencies than real instruments.
Mids
In the midrange, the DX4000CL continues its warm and lively texture. These frequencies give each instrument a ton of breathing room, showing fullness and tonal control throughout the sound signature. These mids don’t have too much weight, but the sound elements are still clear and detailed enough to feel rounded. Everything is still well defined with good resolution, even the clear underlining that makes other instruments stand out. Vocals benefit greatly from this, as they seem more alive and forward compared to how the DX4000CL produces other sonics. They are vivid and expressive, showing the richest detail of all the resposne this frequency has to offer.
They are high
The treble is very refined while having some light features to keep things interesting. Cymbals and bells have a bit of shimmer, but it’s the character each instrument has that really reflects these high frequencies. Sometimes the highs can show too much power, but the DX4000CL’s resolution keeps everything tight. You get a sense of height and presence that feels very precise and clear. There is a nice definition without reaching over and making the height feel too hot.
Summary
The Final Audio DX4000CL is not a headphone that relies on exaggerated stage or frequency enhancement to make it sound. Instead, it delivers a balanced, natural sound signature defined by graphical precision, warmth, organic mids, controlled low response, and refined treble extension. Its soundstage may not be the widest in its class, but spatial precision and instrument placement feel deliberate and lifelike, making it very engaging during concentrated listening sessions.
Combined with its modular, adjustable construction, premium materials, and equipped with a 4.4mm silver-plated cable, the DX4000CL demonstrates Final Audio’s commitment to durability and acoustic integrity. For audiophiles looking for a closed-back headphone that emphasizes realism, tonal coherence, and technical precision over brilliance, the Final Audio DX4000CL delivers a thoughtfully designed, satisfying musical experience.
