How-To & Tips

How to change the date of birth and year of your Apple Account

In this quick tutorial, we’ll explain why you might want to change the date of birth (DOB) in your Apple Account and how to do it on an iPhone, iPad, Mac, or web browser.

Like most online accounts, when you create your Apple Account (formerly called an Apple ID), you’re asked to enter your birth month, day, and year.

Apple uses this information to calculate your age, which is then used to customize your experience on iPhone, iPad, Mac, and other Apple devices. For example, if you set up a new iPhone with your child’s account, Apple will automatically enable other security features such as blurring nude photos received in iMessage.

Reasons to change your Apple Account birthday

First, you may want to update your DOB if you entered it incorrectly when creating your account.

Changing an account’s birthday can grant or deny access to age-restricted apps, songs, movies, TV shows, Game Center features, other app features, in-app purchases, and more.

Apple now also allows third-party apps to reach a user’s age range, so that the app can aggregate safe, appropriate information for them. Therefore, setting the right age is important.

And finally, you may want to limit the Apple Account age of your older son, daughter, or family members, if you want to manage Screen Time and restrictions for them even after they turn 18. Conversely, if you want to convert a child’s Apple Account to a regular account, manually changing their birthday is the way to do it.

But before you proceed, be aware that Apple may (rarely) ask you to verify using your birthday for account recovery or other verification purposes. So it is recommended that you save the relevant information, but if you must use another date, note it somewhere safe for future reference.

A warning: A date of birth is something you should not change or revise often. If you do it too many times in a short period of time, Apple may limit your account.
