The cameras of the Samsung Galaxy S26 bring a new trick, and, strangely, the company did not make it clear.
The Korean tech giant is quietly introducing a 24MP shooter mode to all of Samsung’s latest and greatest phones, but instead of featuring it front and center, the feature has been included after more downloads.
While top models now include larger sensors, like the Galaxy S26 Ultra’s 200MP main camera and 50MP telephoto, most phones still default to 12MP photos. That’s because pixel binning combines multiple pixels into one, improving light capture, dynamic range, and processing speed. You get cleaner images faster, but you sacrifice some raw detail.
The new 24MP option is Samsung’s way of finding the middle ground. Instead of making you choose between 12MP quick shots or more detailed 50MP and 200MP photos, the 24MP mode offers a mix of the two, according to Samsung’s Community president (via Android Authority).
AI-powered processing
The system relies on AI Fusion processing to extract detail from high-resolution data while still using multi-frame computer imaging such as 12MP mode. This should result in sharper images with stronger lighting and less motion blur.
There is, however, a catch. 24MP mode is not enabled within the camera app out of the box. To access it, you need Samsung Camera Assistant, a Good Lock module available through the Galaxy Store.
After installing it, you have to manually change the advanced resolution options before the 24MP setting will appear in the stock camera interface. It’s a simple process, but it’s also kind of an extra step that regular users will never go through.
Samsung often uses Camera Assistant as a playground for experimental or enthusiast-focused tools, allowing power users to adjust behavior without overwhelming everyday consumers. However, given how useful this mod can be, burying it behind an add-on may limit its reach.
For photography, the 24MP mode has some clear advantages. The standard 12MP setting is still best for consistent dynamic range and low noise, especially in low light. The 50MP and 200MP modes are great if you want to crop or zoom in a lot, but they can have issues with color and speed. The 24MP mode sits in between, giving you better detail without losing natural colors or everyday fidelity.
Unlike the 24MP mode in Professional RAW, this version is designed for simple point-and-shoot use. You don’t need to make any adjustments manually.
Interestingly, because the Galaxy S26 series shares the same camera hardware across models, there are speculations that this feature could extend to older devices with future One UI updates.
Android Central Take
I think this is exactly the kind of camera users benefit from. Not everyone wants huge 200MP files that eat up storage, but most people still want to capture sharp photos without extra effort. A balanced 24MP mode makes everyday photography feel premium without overcomplicating things, as long as you can get them.
But unless Samsung puts this option in the main camera app, it probably won’t be an option for people who just want great photos without the hassle.
