Apple believes cheaper MacBook will be ‘amazing value,’ tempting switchers: report

Starting tomorrow, Apple will launch its much-anticipated cheap MacBook. It will be powered by the A18 Pro chip, offer a smaller display, but still have all the main Mac features that people know and love.
A major point of contention has been the price point. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, Apple believes it will be an ‘incredible value,’ and may even convince many Windows and Chromebook users to make the switch.
MacBook rumor recap
We’ve been hearing about Apple’s first low-cost MacBook offering for almost a year now, but to recap, the budget MacBook will offer the following:
- A small 12.9-inch display, which may have low brightness and no True Tone support
- Aluminum chassis, with many ‘fun’ color options
- The A18 Pro chip from the iPhone 16 Pro, maybe 8GB of RAM
- Limited storage options, which may only offer 256GB and 512GB
- Very low starting price, as low as $599
It all sounded very exciting – and we should see it soon, when Apple will launch a week of announcements from Monday, March 2 to Wednesday, March 4.

Apple believes it will be an ‘incredible value’
According to Gurman, Apple internally believes it will be “an incredible amount” – potentially driving loads of PC and Chromebook buyers to change the ecosystem:
Inside, the low-end MacBook is described as an “incredible value,” and Apple believes the launch will drive a large number of Windows machine switches to Chromebooks. It may force iPhone users without computers to buy their first Mac.
Gurman also reports that there may be high demand on the day of the launch, when store employees are warned that they may have to work long hours – similar to what will happen on the day of the launch of the iPhone. There will also be an ‘entire table dedicated to one of the new products,’ most likely a new low-cost MacBook.
Only time will tell if this new MacBook will truly be a hit. Personally, while I think the new MacBook will be very compelling, I don’t think there are any rumors that suggest it will get much of a day with consumers – it would be a bit of a burnout. Apple seems to think otherwise, so maybe there are some important details we haven’t seen yet.
Finish it
As an update, Apple will launch this new cheap MacBook and other new Apple products as early as tomorrow. The company will begin Monday with an online announcement, followed by other announcements on Tuesday, and a final announcement with an in-person press event on Wednesday, March 4.
It’s unclear exactly how the announcements will play out, but the big rumored announcements are the iPhone 17e, the low-cost MacBook, the new MacBook Air with the M5, the new MacBook Pro with the M5 Pro and M5 Max (and the current design), and the iPad and iPad Air refreshes.
