iPhone 17e vs iPhone 16e: Five key improvements

Apple recently flipped the script and refreshed its entry-level iPhone after just one year. Here’s everything that’s new between the newly announced iPhone 17e and last year’s iPhone 16e.

All new from iPhone 16e to iPhone 17e

Apple is marketing the upgrade from the iPhone 16e of 2025 to the iPhone 17e of 2026 in five key points:

  • working quickly
  • improved camera system
  • improved durability
  • the magic of MagSafe
  • double the original storage

They are not promised working quickly it comes from moving to the Apple A19 chip from the A18 chip.

The A19 is technically the same chip used inside the iPhone 17. The main difference is that like the A18 chip inside the iPhone 16e, the A19 has a 4-core GPU. However, the iPhone 17e’s A19 has GPU cores with Neural Accelerators for better AI performance.

Apple has also replaced its original C1 modem with the latest C1X cellular modem, which it says is “up to 2x faster than C1 on the iPhone 16e.”

iPhone 17e improved camera system adds support for Apple’s next-generation portrait mode with Focus and Depth Control.

This means that unlike the iPhone 16e, the new iPhone 17e “recognizes people, dogs, and cats and automatically saves depth details, allowing users to turn photos into beautiful photos with background blur after capture and adjust the focus area in the Photos app.”

As a member of the iPhone 17 family, the new iPhone 17e has been announced improved durability comes from the Ceramic Shield 2 glass front. That means the iPhone 17e’s display has “3x better scratch resistance” and “improved optical resistance to reduce glare” compared to the iPhone 16e.

Perhaps the biggest relief of all is what Apple calls it right the magic of MagSafe on the iPhone 17e. Not including MagSafe with the iPhone 16e was a big omission, but compared to the iPhone SE that replaced it, the budget model did not lose a feature.

Adding MagSafe to the iPhone 17e not only introduces support for MagSafe accessories like stands, wallets, and battery packs. The wireless charging speed of the iPhone 17e actually doubles compared to the iPhone 16e, jumping from 7.5W to 15W with a 20W or higher adapter.

The iPhone 17e also features Qi2 support, not just standard Qi support like the iPhone 16e.

And most importantly the iPhone 17e, Apple’s offering double the original storage compared to the iPhone 16e without increasing the price makes it a better value for customers.

The iPhone 16e came in three storage capacities: 128GB, 256GB, 512GB. The iPhone 17e has only two storage options: 256GB and 512GB. What’s new this time around is that 256GB costs $599 and 512GB costs $799 compared to $699 and $899, respectively, for the upgraded storage on the iPhone 16e.

Apple notes that the starting 256GB of storage on the iPhone 17e is actually a 4x increase compared to the iPhone 12. That creates a huge increase in storage for upgrade customers.

Visually, the iPhone 16e and iPhone 17e look similar with a “premium matte finish” that includes either black or white. New for the iPhone 17e, however, is Apple’s new pink color option.

Physically, there is also very little weight gain, according to Apple’s detailed data. The iPhone 17e weighs 5.96 ounces (169 grams) compared to the iPhone 16e at 5.88 ounces (167 grams).

What remains the same or is not missing?

When Apple replaced the old iPhone SE with the iPhone 16e last year, it dropped the starting price from $429 to $599 (while doubling the storage from 64GB).

This year, the iPhone 17e doubles the basic storage and while the original price is still the same $599.

512GB is still the maximum storage option for the iPhone 17e, however, so you’ll need to look elsewhere if your needs can’t fit into the maximum storage option for the iPhone 16e.

While the thickness of the glass increases, the 6.1-inch screen size remains the same as the notch style of the iPhone 13 and iPhone 14. If you like the look and work of Apple’s. Dynamic Islandthe iPhone 17e doesn’t have it like the iPhone 16e.

And while cellular performance has increased due to the jump from the C1 modem to the C1X modem, some cellular and wireless features have not changed from the iPhone 16e to the iPhone 17e: 5G (sub-6 GHz) with 4×4 MIMO, Wi-Fi 6again Bluetooth 5.3.

Battery life is also unchanged as promised for video playback 26 hours and the ability to charge quickly up to 50% charging in 30 minutes with a 20W or more USB-C adapter.

Overall, the iPhone 17e may be a tough comparison next to the iPhone 17, but it’s hands-down the best value for money next to the iPhone 16e.

Doubling the storage base and MagSafe support with the iPhone 17e means the price of the iPhone 16e should drop at least $100 while it’s still on sale.
