‘Canvas in AI Mode’ makes draftable, interactive tools available from within Search

What you need to know
- Google announced that “Canvas in AI Mode” will be released to US users today (Mar 4).
- Canvas gets new capabilities, as users can have draft documents and create “interactive” tools with the added ability to preview their coding and change it.
- Canvas was released last March, as a feature that would allow users to collaborate with Gemini to create documents, blog posts, research papers, and more.
Google is combining its two features into one convenient place for users who want to be creative or work with code.
Canvas is all about letting users bring creativity to their work, and now Google says it’s bringing those capabilities to AI Mode. In the Search post, Google says it’s rolling out Canvas with AI Mode. US users with English as their preferred language will soon see this feature in AI Mode. Google says Canvas is “more powerful than ever,” as it adds “support for creative writing and coding activities.”
From AI Mode, users can click on the composition icon, then Canvas. Google advises that users must “define” what they want to create in this section. A “working prototype” will be produced in the side panel, which will reportedly pull the latest, most relevant information from its web search and Google’s Knowledge Graph.
Google also says that this example is fully functional. Users can test the functionality of their creation, or they can peek at its code “and refine it through the dialog trace until it does exactly what you need.” The post states that Canvas is able to document users, while also creating interactive tools for them based on their descriptions.
Users can experience Canvas in AI mode today (Mar 4); however, if you don’t, give it a while and check back later.
Canvas says hello to Search users
The partnership with Gemini emerged last year when Google launched Canvas. The company pitched the feature as helping users “create, write, edit, and refine documents or code in one place.” Gemini, of course, is the brain of the operation, running every process you might need in the background. By itself, Canvas will export everything you’ve done in Google Docs (if the file type matches). The canvas also brought other capabilities to Gemini, as it could change the tone of the document you were writing or working on.
At the end of I/O 2025, Google showed off a web application it created using Canvas. There is a proven skepticism about whether AI can create a decent web app, and Google wants to show that it can.
Android Central Take
From a usability standpoint, Canvas definitely beats it. A feature that can help users understand coding. If you think about it, you can have an AI create something, and then look at its code to see How. I can see this working well for new coders or aspiring coders. You can “test” your ideas, see how they will work, and then build on that yourself. When I look at it this way, Canvas is more of a teaching tool than anything else.
