Works with BMX SolidSafe Air hands: The smallest Qi2 power bank yet

I’ve been looking for a small MagSafe battery for years. I’ve tested a bunch of these battery packs, and some have been great, but they all share the same compromise, which is bulk. This year’s iPhone Air made me want a smaller MagSafe battery solution even more. So when I saw that BMX had released its SolidSafe Air, which has a capacity of 5,000 mAh and is less than 6.8mm thick, I knew I needed to give it a shot. After spending a little over a week with it, here’s what you need to know.

There’s a lot to like about this MagSafe power bank on paper. You get the fast charging speed of Qi2 15W, the ability to charge multiple devices, and it uses a solid state battery to fit 5000mAh in such a thin and small chassis. Here’s everything a battery can do:
- 5,000mAh capacity
- Qi2 15W wireless charging speed
- 20W USB-C out (Power Delivery)
- It can charge two devices at the same time
- 6.88mm thin and 116g
- Titanium construction
- LED battery level indicators
It also charges via USB-C at 15W, allowing it to charge from 0% to 100% in less than 2 hours. I also like the fit and finish of it. The front side has this brushed titanium look, the inner part has a soft rubber feel.

My experience
What attracted me the most was the small size of the power bank. I had never seen a power bank so thin. I’ve been using it next to my iPhone 17 Pro, and it fits perfectly. As an iPhone 17 Pro user and not a Pro Max user, I noticed that sometimes some power banks have a lip that exceeds the 17 Pro because the battery is designed to be used more with the Pro Max. I felt that in order to make this SolidSafe battery smaller, they should make it longer and wider like Apple did with their MagSafe power bank for the iPhone Air. Even though it’s wider than other power banks, and I mean a smidge, it still fits nicely in my iPhone 17 Pro. You can see from my photos that the battery fits perfectly with the 17 Pro on all sides.
Because this is so small and light, the power bank does not add much weight or thickness to the phone. For context, the iPhone 17 Pro is 8.75mm and weighs 206g, while the SolidSafe Air is 6.8mm and weighs 90g less. Another comparison I like to make is Apple’s MagSafe battery for the iPhone Air, which is 7.7mm and 127g. To understand how small and light the SolidSafe battery is. I’ve been carrying it personally in my fanny pack, and it doesn’t add much to my everyday carry.

It’s charging
When it comes to charging, I used it a lot with my iPhone 17 Pro. I wanted to test to see how much juice it actually gave me. I would throw this battery into my iPhone 17 Pro when it had about 20% to 30% battery, and it would reach between 90% to 95% charge while still using the phone occasionally. It adds very little bulk, and the brushed titanium finish makes it nice to hold and adds some grip. I also charged my AirPods Pro a few times wirelessly, and it worked as expected. The battery can get a little warm, but nothing to worry about. The battery itself is also charged very quickly. So it’s good to know that if I’m in a hurry, I can still get charged quickly.
The only thing I wish it had was an LCD to give me some battery percentage or charging diagnostics but I’m sure it would have added a lot or reduced the battery capacity to open, so I understand the compromise. But overall, this battery is very good. They offer a regular SolidSafe 5k and a 10k that gives you that exposure.

Price, availability and final thoughts
The BMX SolidSafe Air is available today on the BMX website. They come in 3 colors: Silver, Gold, and Black (I have the silver one), and are $59.
If you’re in the market for a new MagSafe power bank and you care about slimness and portability, this is the best option out there. I’ve yet to see a battery bank that’s this thin and fits Apple’s aesthetic as well as it does. Although BMX is marketing this as an iPhone Air companion, this battery is also perfect for anyone who has an iPhone with MagSafe and wants to reduce bulk.
WHAT DO YOU THINK? Do you like the idea of MagSAfe mini batteries? Or would you like the batteries to be bigger for more capacity? Let’s discuss below.
