It is not at all surprising to see a discount on the Sony WH-1000XM5 headphones, as the successor, the Sony WH-1000XM6, was launched in 2025. But, it’s surprising to see a discount this good.

The Sony WH-1000XM5 holds a stable position among the best wireless headphones, losing only to the XM6. But, that doesn’t mean they aren’t still five-star quality headphones.
The XM5s are great, especially when you consider performance per pound. With impressive sound quality, impressive delivery, an impressive feature set and 30 hours of battery life all packed in, you get a lot for your money, and Sony’s winning formula is hard to beat.
Design-wise, a complete overhaul of the series introduced the XM5’s “noiseless design” which created smaller, more seamless headphones that fold down into a carrying case. They don’t curl into a ball though.
When it comes to comfort, however, our expert testers say “they’re up there with the best and the Sonys deliver just the right amount of compression power, so they feel secure without threatening to crush our ears”.
Powered by the same Integrated Processor V1 as the XM4s, noise cancellation is impressive, even introducing improved automatic noise cancellation for the first time and increasing the number of microphones from four to eight.
Plus, there’s an incredibly useful feature set, including Talk and Chat that pauses playback when you start talking, Quick Attention that lowers the volume when you cover the right earpiece, and Wearing Detection that lets them hear when you take it off and mute your audio automatically.
Bluetooth Multipoint and Bluetooth LDAC support are also compatible with Sony’s LDAC technology, which allows high-quality audio streaming from compatible devices at higher bitrates than standard Bluetooth.
But, how do they sound? In our full review, we said: “The WH-1000XM5 has all the features that made previous generations leaders in the money class, including that effortless music sound. But the latest generation manages to deliver even greater clarity and a more open presentation. It’s quite a leap indeed.”
It’s not entirely surprising that the XM5 sports a discount now that the Sony WH-1000XM6 is available, but a discount as good as this one is hard to beat.
