Apple is updating the iPad Mini on its own timeline, Samsung is giving up competition at the end of the segment, and few other brands are willing to invest in advancing the tablet. It is assumed that people want a big phone or a big tablet. That’s an unusual bet for every rider, traveler, and student looking for something that fits in a jacket pocket.

Huawei denies it. The MatePad Mini arrived at MWC 2026 with an 8.8-inch flexible OLED display inside the body that measures 5.1mm thin and weighs 255 grams. The iPad Mini (A17 Pro), by comparison, is 6.3mm thick, weighs 293 grams in the Wi-Fi model, and sports a smaller 8.3-inch screen. So the real question is: can a tablet running HarmonyOS compete for the compact crown, or does the software catch the hardware clearly getting the short shrift? Huawei launched this in September 2025, but Barcelona provided the right international time, and the MWC show felt like a confidence move rather than a start.
What emerged was not an idea. It’s a shipping product that’s available in many markets today, and it’s already ahead of many things that people stop looking at on the showroom floor.

Huawei MatePad Mini Specs
Take the MatePad Mini and register the weight quickly, or rather the lack thereof. Those 38 grams that separate it from the Wi-Fi model of the iPad Mini feel obvious when you hold it with one hand. Huawei has used a magnesium alloy frame with a 3D vegan fiber back panel, which creates a matte, non-glass texture that feels very resistant to smudges. The 5.1mm profile looks impossibly thin from the side. It ships in Spruce Green and Graphite Black, both understated.
On the specs side, the 8.8-inch OLED runs at a resolution of 2.5K with a pixel count of 1600 x 2560, roughly 343 pixels per inch, and a refresh rate of 120Hz. Maximum brightness reaches 1800 nits. Contrast is up to 2,000,000:1. Color accuracy remains below ΔE 1, which is a professional monitor for a tablet at this price. Bezels measure 2.99mm, producing what Huawei estimates to be a 92% screen-to-body ratio, and the difference makes the iPad Mini’s borders look relatively primitive. If you hold them together, the generation gap in display quality will not be missed.
The unique PaperMatte edition (slightly thicker at 5.2mm and 260g) diffuses light with a layer of transparent film that softens glare and reads like paper in bright light, according to Huawei. Paired with the M-Pencil Pro, which attaches magnetically and supports pinch gestures, barrel rotation, and three interchangeable tips, either version turns into a pocket-sized notebook. AI handwriting conversion and math recognition within the Notes app add real creative value, though both features require an internet connection to work.
A 6,400mAh battery with 66W SuperCharge handles the power side well, promising a boost in line with phone-standard charging speeds. Under the surface, there is a Kirin 9010 chip, up to 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage (higher capacity is available in selected markets) runs everything smoothly for reading, streaming, and small creative work. Dual-band Wi-Fi (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz), two speakers with Histen 9.5, a fingerprint power button, and an optional 5G variant with a mobile phone that surrounds the interior without feeling like corners have been cut.
HarmonyOS 4.3 is where this tablet cleanly separates its audience. There is no Google Play Store, no Google services baked into it. Huawei’s AppGallery has grown, but gaps remain in the main applications. Sideloading includes some APKs for Android, although interactions vary. The OS itself is responsive and clean, a touch of iOS and Android. For anyone already in the Huawei device family, the integration of multiple devices makes the software feel more powerful than vulnerable.
Who should skip this
If your daily tools reside within the Google ecosystem, Gmail, Maps, YouTube with a synced account, and the full Google Play Store, this isn’t for you. The HarmonyOS gap is real, and sideloading isn’t a long-term fix for apps that require Google Play Services underneath. Software remains the single biggest obstacle to mainstream adoption outside of China.
Anyone expecting a laptop-level production or ultra-cheap compact tablet should also pass. The 8.8-inch screen is best for using, reading, and taking notes, not multitasking or spreadsheets. Budget Android tablets from Lenovo or Samsung offer big screens for little money, even if the display quality and small size are incomparable. The price here only clicks if you specifically want a premium compact experience.
Whose is this
Travelers get a clear victory here. The Huawei MatePad Mini weighs about as thin as a paperback, fits in a jacket pocket, and pairs that OLED screen with enough battery to cover a long-haul flight. Passengers reading on trains get a purposefully larger screen than a phone that works well with one hand while stationary.
The PaperMatte display makes it a real e-reader contender for people looking for color pages and zero glare. Students and note takers who own the M-Pencil Pro get a sketchpad in a size unmatched by conventional tablets. Artists who jot down ideas between meetings can slip this into a jacket and forget it’s there until inspiration strikes. If you already use Huawei phones or laptops, the integration of the ecosystem makes this an even easier choice.
The MatePad Mini shows that compact tablets are not dead. Someone just needed to build one that chose screen quality and portability over raw processing power, and Huawei has done just that.
