JBL L82 Classic Speakers Review – HiFiReport

At HiFiReport Audio, I truly felt the owner, Lee Chia-Ching’s, passion for music, audio, and sound. This passion has persisted for over a decade. Within this space, every piece of equipment, every pair of speakers, and every accessory, carefully selected and skillfully matched by him, possesses a distinct character, radiating its unique vitality. This is certainly true of our subject today—the JBL L82 bookshelf speakers.

Unique HiFi Store Atmosphere

This was my first visit to HiFiReport Audio. Following the address, I arrived but couldn’t find the entrance immediately. It looked just like a charming cafe, but it was closed, though it seemed like people were working inside. There was no sign of a HiFi store.

Hesitantly, I walked in, and someone pointed me towards the stairs, indicating I should go downstairs. “Aha, it’s here!” Even though I had checked out HiFiReport Audio’s Facebook page beforehand and seen photos of the store’s interior, actually being there in person, I was still amazed by its highly personal style and atmosphere. This place is more than just a HiFi store; it’s like a veteran audiophile’s collection room and a professional musician’s studio. Everywhere you look, there are hidden audio and recording equipment from different eras. Browsing through it felt like a treasure hunt – truly fascinating! Owner Lee Chia-Ching told me that the ground floor is Beans and Beats Cafe, and the basement is (Yan She), a local hip-hop music label, both ventures of his good friend, Dilla’s senior.

Because the record label still requires record production, HiFiReport retains an area for music production and mixing, filled with professional equipment you would only see in a recording studio.

For many years, besides running a home audio retail business, Lee Chia-Ching has also been continuously involved in record production. Therefore, he is very familiar with and proficient in using recording, mixing, MIDI, and various professional equipment. He truly bridges both home and professional audio fields.

Vinyl Records Selection

Before establishing HiFiReport, Lee Chia-Ching accumulated ten years of experience in other high-end audio stores. So, although his own business has only been open for 5 years, his practical experience is very rich, and he can provide a wide range of services, including two-channel audio system matching and recommendations, home theater system planning, overall audio-visual space design services, room acoustics treatment, commercial space audio planning, etc. Selling JBL speakers is just one facet of his expertise.

In addition, Lee Chia-Ching is also a DIY expert. The cables he sells in his store include branded cables, as well as various cables and power strips he handcrafts himself. The craftsmanship is quite meticulous, and the variety is extensive. You can audition them in the store or purchase them on his online auction site.

Another major feature of HiFiReport is that it sells many brand-new vinyl records that are hard to find domestically, covering various music genres, both popular and niche.

Lee Chia-Ching is not only an audiophile but also a music and record enthusiast. Because he loves records so much, and many vinyl and CDs he wanted to buy were not imported by local agents and unavailable in Taiwan, he directly bought them from Amazon. Since he was buying anyway, he bought a few more copies, not only for his own collection but also to share with HiFiReport visitors, which is a win-win situation.

People-Centric Space Design

Lee Chia-Ching highly values the harmonious relationship between people, audio equipment, and space. Even with a deep love for audio, one should not be controlled by it and let audio equipment dominate the space. Therefore, he has decorated his store to feel more like your and my home, rather than a rigidly symmetrical or sound-absorbing/diffusion-panel-filled dedicated listening room. After all, not many people have dedicated listening rooms at home.

The layout of HiFiReport is not composed of individual listening rooms of different sizes, but rather a large rectangular open space, divided into 4 areas, each with different product styles and sound characteristics. This includes the music production area mentioned earlier, so you can also hear active professional studio monitors here.

The audio brands and products he selects not only need to sound good and have their own characteristics, but they must also have a unique aesthetic to enhance the spatial atmosphere, allowing audio equipment to blend seamlessly with the interior environment, just like the JBL L82 bookshelf speakers we are reviewing today.

Classic JBL Aesthetics

Lee Chia-Ching told me that he grew up listening to JBL. His family’s audio system when he was young was JBL speakers paired with a Sansui amplifier. He has many fond memories of old JBLs. Therefore, when he first heard that JBL was launching the L100 Classic retro speakers, he didn’t hesitate and immediately ordered them from YNDA (the distributor). Later, the L82 Classic and L52 Classic were successively launched, and the store also displayed them all.

To faithfully present the Modern Vintage style of the JBL Classic series, Lee Chia-Ching specially brought out his treasured 1960s wooden cabinet to create a listening environment with a nostalgic ambiance. Just sitting down, even before listening, it felt right.

The L82 Classic is the second model in the JBL Classic series. It adopts a 2-driver, 2-way bass-reflex design, equipped with a JT025TI1-4 titanium dome tweeter and an 8-inch JW200PW-6 paper cone mid-bass woofer.

The tweeter is positioned in the center of a shallow waveguide, which helps the dispersion of sound waves and their downward extension, allowing the crossover point to be set at a very low 1.7kHz, making it easier to smoothly integrate with the mid-bass woofer.

The front baffle is equipped with a high-frequency adjustment knob, which can boost or attenuate the high frequencies. This not only allows users to make adjustments according to room conditions, but also to fine-tune the ideal sound with or without the grille.

The L82 Classic also features the retro yet modern Quadrex foam grille, available in black, orange, and blue.

The speaker cabinet is finished with walnut real wood veneer, giving it a high-quality look and excellent tactile feel.

The bass-reflex port is located on the front baffle, allowing the L82 Classic to be placed closer to the back wall.

The height of the L82 Classic itself is not low, reaching 47.2 cm. General speaker stands are too tall for it. It is recommended that you purchase the dedicated speaker stands together. They come with a slight upward tilt. After placing the L82 Classic on them, it will naturally tilt upwards, thus placing it lower visually and also looking better.

Versatile Amplifier – JBL SA750

The amplifier used for the audition was the JBL SA750 integrated amplifier, which was recently launched.

The SA750 not only has streaming capabilities but also features Dirac Live room correction. Lee Chia-Ching knows the power of Dirac Live very well, so as soon as he knew the SA750 was launched, he immediately told YNDA to import it.

Lee Chia-Ching has been involved in music production, recording, and mixing for a long time, and is very familiar with the equalization, tuning, digital processing, and other functions in professional recording equipment. In addition, he has installed many home theater systems from the past to the present and is very familiar with the room correction functions of various surround sound receivers. Therefore, he is very clear that digital audio processing is also very helpful for two-channel audio. When he learned that the SA750 has Dirac Live, he certainly wouldn’t miss it! Before my arrival, Lee Chia-Ching had already very carefully used the Dirac Live on the SA750 to measure the room conditions and perform compensation and adjustments.

Because the left side of the listening environment is a wall and the right side is an open space, the volume and frequency response of the left and right channels are not balanced. Usually, this needs to be adjusted by speaker placement or by using room acoustic treatment devices such as sound absorption and diffusion. However, through Dirac Live’s measurement and digital correction, the L82 Classic and the furniture arrangement do not need to be changed, and a smooth and full listening experience can be obtained.

The appeal of the SA750 is not limited to this. Its streaming capabilities cover UPnP, Google Chromecast, AirPlay 2, and Roon Ready, making it truly versatile. The tone control section has 7-band digital filters, and analog and digital inputs are all available, even a phono stage, and the power output is also sufficient. In terms of appearance, it has wooden side panels, metal toggle switches, large knobs, etc., full of Vintage classic style.

What more could you ask for in such an amplifier?

Tavern-Like Atmosphere

The benefit of streaming is that you don’t need to bring CDs when you go out for auditions. Especially since the SA750 supports Tidal Connect, I used my phone’s Tidal app, swiped twice, and the music started flowing, easily enjoying a relaxed and pleasant atmosphere.

Honestly, if Lee Chia-Ching had offered me beer instead of coffee, I would have forgotten that I was here for work.

The sound of the L82 Classic paired with the SA750 is very warm and mellow, listening to it is effortless and without any unpleasant harshness. The timbre carries a slightly amber, rich quality. As the volume increases, I felt like I was in a small tavern, with a lively atmosphere around me.

The advantage of the L82 Classic is its excellent thickness and ample but not excessive bass quantity. Therefore, even in HiFiReport’s large listening space, the sound is not easily diluted and can still provide a rich listening experience.

Throughout the audition, the L82 Classic was always with the Quadrex foam grille attached, and the high-frequency adjustment knob was set at the 0dB position. Lee Chia-Ching said that installing or removing the grille will change the high-frequency perception. At this point, you can appropriately adjust the high-frequency level to obtain your preferred sound.

Benefits of Open Space

During the audition, I also noticed that the speakers disappeared! Of course, I don’t mean that the speakers were no longer visible, but rather that I couldn’t accurately judge the location of the speakers from the sound.

This is the benefit of HiFiReport’s open space, making the soundstage appear more open and spacious. Plus, with no back wall behind me, the sound naturally diffused from the front and extended behind me. Coupled with a long listening distance, the soundstage was like a whole plane, so the speakers disappeared.

In such a space, if not handled properly, the sound can easily lack focus and clarity. However, I didn’t experience this issue, which is clearly due to the Dirac Live room acoustic processing.

Dirac Live not only adjusts the room’s frequency response but also includes time coherence of different frequency bands, speaker phase alignment, room resonance and reflection treatment, etc., which are particularly helpful for the system’s soundstage performance, image outlines, and localization.

When playing rock music, through the L82 Classic, I could not only hear clear outlines of the drums and bass, but also distinguish the proportional differences between different instruments. The sense of layering in the sound was also just right. The music remained well-structured even in its intensity.

In addition, the L82 Classic has quite full bass even at low volumes. Although the high frequencies heard on-site were slightly less prominent, the overall balance was good. The balance was even better at higher volumes, with full mid and low frequencies and appropriate high-frequency quantity. Listening to it was effortless, making me want to listen at even higher volumes for even greater satisfaction!
