The Xbox Backwards Compatibility program returns

Microsoft’s Xbox team has brought a number of gamer-friendly features to its gaming ecosystem over the years, but for many, none are as important or valuable as backwards compatibility. Ever since Xbox boss Phil Spencer famously announced the Xbox Backwards Compatibility Program in 2015, it’s been an integral part of the Xbox experience.
Xbox fans are so passionate about backwards compatibility and the ability to play their old games that were released for the Xbox 360 and the original Xbox, that the demand for the return of this system is currently growing online. Notably, Microsoft made every game backwards compatible, but unfortunately announced that no new games were planned for 2021 due to legal issues with licensing.

This news comes at the same time Microsoft announced that “Xbox mode” is coming to Windows 11 PCs next month, which is a redesigned version of the Xbox experience on the full screen that appeared on the Xbox Ally handheld. The company also revealed that it is building an integrated Game Development Kit (GDK) that allows developers to build for Xbox and PC simultaneously, supporting a hybrid console-PC version of the upcoming Project Helix console.
With that in mind, one can’t help but wonder if the Xbox Backwards Compatibility team is working on making classic Xbox and Xbox 360 titles playable on Windows 11 PCs, which would keep them accessible on Project Helix’s new console while bringing them to PC gamers.
That would be a big an extension to the Xbox Backwards Compatibility Program, and may run an improved version of the emulation technology Microsoft currently uses to run older games on the Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S systems. Of course, this was not the case confirmedbut it sure will be good, and it will coincide with how the Xbox comes in.
There is also the possibility of new games being added to the Backwards Compatibility Program, although this will require the Xbox team to find a solution to the technical and legal issues that have been preventing many games from being made backwards compatible in the first place. Maybe one is found…maybe not.
In the end, it’s still nice to know that Microsoft and Xbox are working to make sure of it existing the backwards offerings carry over to its new system, and talk of “new ways to play” classic games definitely makes me hope for some sort of PC expansion for the Backwards Compatible System. Only time will tell, though.
