Bravely Default is being remastered and demoted for Xbox

On March 12, 2026, Square Enix quietly, with little fanfare, dropped Bravely Default Flying Fairy HD Remaster on Xbox and PC via Steam platforms.
This game is an HD Remaster of Bravely Default, a turn-based JRPG released in 2012 for the Nintendo 3DS. It was recently remastered in Bravely Default Flying Fairy HD Remaster as the Nintendo Switch 2 launch in 2025.

Watch it open
Bravely Default follows the story of Tiz, a young man whose village is swallowed by the Great Gorge. During the survivor’s trial, Tiz meets a mysterious woman named Agnès, and they discover that the world is slowly being destroyed by the forces of darkness that have corrupted the Crystals of Life.
So they set out on a journey across the land of Luxendarc to free the crystals from the dark forces and save the world from destruction.
The setting, chibi art style, and gameplay of this game is a huge throwback to Final Fantasy’s Super Nintendo era titles, especially Final Fantasy 5.
Players will build a team of 4 customizable heroes through the Careers system, travel the world and dungeons to find powerful loot, and fight villains and silly monsters in turn-based battles.
However, Bravely Default puts a few unique twists on chance-based battles by using Brave and Default mechanics.
By default (which is another form of protection), you can withstand incoming enemy damage and build Bravery Points. Once you accumulate Courage Points, you can attack multiple times at once or use multiple healing spells at once to escape from a bad situation.
Be careful not to spend too many Brave Points, as your Brave Point meter can dip to negative numbers and cause you to skip turns, leaving you vulnerable to enemy attacks.
What’s worse is that the enemy has access to the Brave and Default mechanics. If you don’t find ways to prevent enemies from getting Courage Points or prepare enough to defend yourself, even normal, non-boss enemies will tear your team apart in no time.
Bravely’s HD Remaster includes a variety of improved HD graphics, a redesigned UI, and several quality-of-life features that are able to advance episodes of events.
What’s more is that the original 3DS version of Bravely Default’s network features have been re-optimized for modern network systems, and two mini-games have been added for the HD remaster.
I can’t wait to see the classic Square Enix JRPGs come to Xbox and PC
Square Enix has been on a tear porting its library to multiple platforms over the past few years.
We actually have almost the main Final Fantasy game, Final Fantasy Tactics, a couple of Mana and Front Mission games, and now Bravely Default on Xbox Series X|S and PC.
I’m personally excited to see Bravely Default get new life, as I never played the first one when it came out due to, well, a personal and immature bias I had towards Square Enix as a youngster.
At the time, the seminal Final Fantasy XIII trilogy had come out, and I hated it so much that it made me give up on JRPGs entirely until Atlus’ Persona series rekindled my love for the genre years later.
Now that I’m older and wiser, it’s time to finally give Bravely Default a shot and see what this game did to earn so much praise and fanfare back in the day.
